Thanks to a recent post by Maria Hudspith about the growing momentum of integrating lived and living experience and expertise into the work of pain, I thought I'd reflect on how far we've come through the lens of how my own work in this space has shifted. Yesterday, Alex Haagaard and I presented at a Science of Team Science conference on PxP, and how we've gone beyond patient/lived experience partnership to true patient/lived experience leadership, supported by institutions and institutionally affiliated leaders, researchers, and professionals. We also have a recent publication out about this! (I'll share in the comments). A massive shoutout to Karim Khan, AO and Hetty Mulhall of Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) for providing that institutional support and sharing power, letting people with lived experience lead the way. And massive thank you to Dawn Richards for facilitating the process, and to the entire 2023 PxP Steering Committee for an awesome inaugural conference. (PxP 2024 is in September!) We've come a long way from my first publication in this space (in Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT) pleading the case for patient partnership in research being the right thing to do! And now I'm off to the International Association for the Study of Pain World Congres, and will be chatting about how patient and public partnerships build trust in pain evidence at the MESISIG Symposium.
