From Teenager to Billionaire: The Jersey Mike's Franchise Success Story Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike's Subs, has turned a local sandwich shop into a multibillion-dollar franchise empire. At just 17, Cancro bought Mike's Subs, the Jersey Shore deli where he had worked since age 14, with a $125,000 loan from his football coach. Fast forward to 2024, and Jersey Mike's has become one of America's fastest-growing food franchises. With nearly 3,000 locations, the chain is on track to hit $4 billion in systemwide revenue this year. Cancro's net worth is estimated at $5.6 billion, surpassing that of many well-known entrepreneurs and celebrities. Key to Jersey Mike's success: 1️⃣ Quality-focused model: Fresh ingredients, meat sliced to order 2️⃣ Franchise selection: Only 1% of applicants approved 3️⃣ Training: 360 hours including "Jersey Pride" culture 4️⃣ Community engagement: Annual "Day of Giving" charity event 5️⃣ Expansion strategy: Opened 5,000 new stores in 5 years Cancro's leadership during the pandemic was particularly noteworthy. While others pulled back, he invested $150 million in store remodels, $40 million in tech upgrades, and launched a major marketing campaign. This bold move resulted in a 65% sales increase from 2019 to 2021. Despite rapid growth, Jersey Mike's maintains a local, mom-and-pop feel in each location. This approach has led to impressive franchisee retention, with only 3.5% of U.S. locations closing or changing ownership. Sometimes, swimming against the current and doubling down during tough times can lead to exponential growth. Peter Cancro was just 18 years old when he acquired Jersey Mike's. Today, he's grown that single sub shop to 2,400+ units nationwide: Peter Cancro was 14 years old when he first got a job at Jersey Mike's Subs in Point Pleasant, NJ in 1968. The original shop was a local gold mine. In today’s dollars, it was generating $100,000 per week in revenue! But in 1971, as a high school senior, he discovered the owner was looking to sell the business. Peter decided he wanted to buy it and skip college – so he started going DOOR-TO-DOOR to raise money to acquire the biz from his boss (incredible ambition!) He ended up raising $125k (roughly ~$890k in today’s dollars), the majority of which came from his former football coach, and was ultimately able to acquire the business. Peter Cancro has been leading Jersey Mike’s ever since, which now boasts 2,400+ locations, and is the undisputed #1 sub franchise in America. In the last handful of years, every stat imaginable has trended positively: • Revenue per location has increased ~70% • Unit growth has compounded (+730 from Jan 2020-2023) • Average unit volume has grown to $1,220,974 as of the end of 2022 A current franchisee credits Cancro and his franchisor leadership team for the success the brand is having. Entrepreneur recently unveiled its 45th annual Franchise 500 list, and Jersey Mike's Subs, the #Manasquan-based sandwich chain that grew from hometown hero to national powerhouse, ranked No. 2 on the 2024 listing. The brand is still poised to grow more going forward, as it plans to go international and open its neighborhood deli-feel to the world. Jersey Mike’s started franchising in 1987. The franchise is big, but it draws strength from thinking small. The sub shop has pursued measured growth with a community-first approach for nearly 40 years. That strategy has drawn the right franchisees in the most receptive locales, and propelled Jersey Mike’s to its highest Franchise 500 ranking ever. (Last year, it was No. 3.) This year marks its 13th consecutive year in the ranking. With 2,557 locations across the country, Jersey Mike’s plans to open 1,000 additional stores in the U.S. over the next three years. Most people who jump into entrepreneurship via franchise ownership are happy with their decision. In fact, according to the International Franchise Association, more than 80% of franchisees are still in franchise ownership after five years. 🚨 "The franchise sold me a dream, and now I'm declaring bankruptcy." Some 'one' didn't say this. Many people have. If you're a franchisee in the UK, you've likely found yourself reading news articles over the last few days about many upset franchisees. After BEING a franchisee with Drain Doctor I have now found myself bankrupt as well as many other franchisees suffering the same fate, I've personally witnessed quite a few franchisors inflate their numbers, glaze over the hard stuff that comes along with owning a franchise, and promise people "the dream". The court of appeal and the high court in the Dwyer (UK Franchising) Ltd v Fredbar case both mentioned the need for regulation in the United Kingdom David More O'Ferrall The Guardian House of Commons 💭 The dream? There's a few... ✅ "Invest a few thousand pounds, and you can earn £400,000+ each year on autopilot." ✅ "It's turnkey. You won't even have to quit your day job." ✅ "We provide all the support." The reality for some of these franchisees... ❌ There aren't many, if any, franchisees living said dream ❌ You CANNOT quit your day job, as it's funding the failing business ❌ The franchise support received is minimal, if any. So... How do they get away with it? Well, some flat out lie. But many run the play: Lying By Omission. It's when you intentionally leave out key information vital to understanding the full picture in order to create a misleading impression. ➡️ Example: "We haven't closed a single Franchise." 🎨 Picture painted: All of our franchisees are successful. ⚖️ Truth: Franchisors may take over failing franchisees while continuing to charge fees or have the one's that fail sign gagging orders or Non Disclosure agreements, just to keep the narrative. It all started with disappointment... A couple of years ago we went to a franchise show and had a look around. For various pretty steep prices, we could buy a McDonalds franchise, a KFC or any number of baby groups in our local towns. We were a bit disappointed. If we were going to be part of someone’s team and start a business, we both agreed we’d want one where we could work from anywhere on our laptops. We’d be buying it to get more freedom and more money and we’d definitely want to impact people a bit more than by giving access to a burger! So we wrote down what we would like to buy. A business that we could become a part of that would make us a lot of money, one where we could work from anywhere and on our terms, one where we could improve people’s lives and a business where we could get the best training and be supported properly. We’d also want a business that has a proven history run by someone that knows what people want to buy and how to sell it. But it would need to be ever-changing as the economic landscape changes. But we both said we wouldn’t buy into something that was going to cost over £100k as most of the franchises that I’d looked at were! We wrote for so long that it turned into a business plan.
