MILITARY LEADERSHIP DOES NOT HAVE A NEED FOR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE Leadership is often misconstrued in business. Many companies like the leader to come from within, to have a technical know-how in order to deliver the project or programme. In the military, countless leaders deliver incredible effect without having specialist knowledge. Some businesses put a ceiling on promotion potential unless you have the expertise in the particular field in which you are operating. "I remember one of my Army bosses, who I happened to bump into the other day, demonstrate this regularly. He was an outstanding leader. A busy man, he once arrived, just in time, to chair a meeting with a dozen or so subject matter experts in attendance and a multi-million pound infrastructure project on the line. Despite not being an expert in construction, engineering or finance, he led the meeting from start to finish with panache and professionalism. By the end of the allocated 90 minutes, every one of the ‘experts’ knew he was on top of what they were due to deliver, and that he would hold them to account to make sure the project was delivered on time and to budget. He gave clear direction to all present and left them in no doubt as to what was required, resolving sticking points with logic and leadership. In different circumstances, many companies would have put a senior construction programme manager in his place. If you hire a #leader, they don’t have to have technical expertise to be successful in their career. Leadership can come in many forms but in itself can be transformational." Give your folks adequate detail on what/why and let them figure out the how. This is leadership 101, but Mattis does an excellent job articulating real world scenarios and balance between detail vs. latitude given to accomplish objectives   · Get in the trenches. Mattis spent a substantial amount of time after hours walking the post talking to his front-line troops. Decisions and situational awareness are most effective based on direct feedback vs. the filtered version you want to hear   · All leaders are readers. For nearly every decision referenced in the book, Mattis cites a book utilized in his decision matrix   · Complexity of problems increases with your position. The higher up the Chain of Command you are, the more complicated problems become. If they could be solved at a lower level, they would not hit your desk

What fighter pilots can teach leaders about good decisions. Fighter pilots must make quick decisions on limited information, and U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and Chief of Training Systems Hasard Lee has developed a three-part system -- the ACE Helix -- that can help leaders assess situations, use fast-forecasting to choose the best action and build the necessary resilience to execute plans, writes Michael McKinney. "The key to maximizing our mental resources is to focus only on what we have control over, which is the next decision to make," says Lee. Put it into practice: Fighter pilots have a lot of confidence, but that isn't an innate trait -- it's a skill everyone can learn, Lee says, "primarily through our internal dialogue -- how we talk to ourselves." Perfectionism and focusing on our mistakes creates self-doubt, which is detrimental to high-stakes decision-making, McKinney adds. #leadership

'Perspective' Flying into London today on a beautiful sunny day allowed me to have unrestricted views across the Capital and also all the way to the south coast. Having been reading a book about WW2 bombing raids against the UK on the flight, what struck me was the compact area in which those raids were conducted by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz in 1940. From my elevated vantage point I could see both the London Docklands, and also Portsmouth in the distance (home to the Royal Navy). Both were targets which were relentlessly bombed. Both are not too far away from each other. When you consider that most bombing raids consisted of around 350 bombers and 600 fighter planes, that's a lot of hardware flying simultaneously. The scale of it is impressive! As always it's all about gaining a sense of perspective, and taking a 'helicopter view' of what's going on in order to fully understand it. It's the same in the workplace when confronted with issues. Try and find a suitable vantage point to fully understand what's going on.
