Here are 3 things I would do in the next quarter if I wanted to help the frontline #nurseleaders on my team achieve improved #patientexperience and quality #outcomes (whether you are a PX leader or senior nurse leader): 1. 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 "𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬" 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 1-2𝐱 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡:   Go with your frontline nurse leader to round in their department together on both patients and staff. Identify ways you can support both they and their team, and even more importantly, observe their process and offer feedback that can aid their efficiency. 2. 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞: Do a 1-2 month look back at their PX data/comments and ask them what type of follow-up occurred for each one, and how you can help. This might mean recognition or investigation/remediation, but both are essential. Be sure to run by discharge date and do this often enough that even surveys returned "late" have an opportunity for meaningful follow-up. 3. 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥:   High volume rounds without skill are wasting time, and lots of skill but little rounding is wasted talent. Through your observation in item 1, you'll know what skill level you are working with, then use your rounding data (weekly or bi-weekly) to ensure that skill and volume match... OR support the nurse leader to correct a "mismatch." Better outcomes are never an accident, but rather, born from these habits.
