When my sister, a licensed Architect from Colombia, migrated to Canada, I saw firsthand the challenges newcomers face when integrating into a new work environment. The impact we as individuals and organizations can have on skilled newcomers can be life-changing for them and their families! By coaching my sister on her job search strategy, effective communication, feedback, and training needs, I realized that my expertise could help others in similar situations in the Architectural and Design industry and other fields. I've been retained by Structure Workshop Ltd a very highly regarded consultancy based in Elephant & Castle with one of the coolest 'offices' you'll ever see - they have a door leading to the upstairs which only opens by a pull string, it's a quirky studio! I've been tasked with helping them find a new Project Engineer, who's either working towards their chartership or recently chartered - basically, someone of between 3-5 years' experience. But having partnered with these guys for a few years now, it's much more about the individual & their character/attitude, as they're extremely good at nurturing talent. Last year they took on an awesome girl on with 3 years' experience (in a slightly different area actually!) & have gone on to nurture her into a great structural engineer, now edging close to her chartership! These guys & girls are typically know for being very selective on the work they pursue though. I guess you could say picky, but in a good way. That’s why their workload mainly consists of museums, art galleries, cultural centres, large scale public art works & carefully selected residential work with a low carbon and innovative focus. If being able to work on projects which don't cripple your soul day after day & week on week isn't enough, these guys also push very heavily on work/life balance, having had a 9-day working fortnight in place for a good few years now - beyond trial stage! 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺’𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻-𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀? 📉 💰 It’s no news that the salaries of Architects are crazy low. This pushes many to freelance or start their own practice without the necessary know-how. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦? I can think of the following reasons: Reason 1: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 😷 💉 During the pandemic, many fresh graduates had to join at lower salaries. The salaries became the new normal and never got back to pre-pandemic levels. Reason 2: 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘺 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 🕴️ 👩💼 While this may be true for a few firms where employers take advantage of prevailing low-salaries, many small firms are simply not earning enough. Reason 3: 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘧𝘦𝘦 🚫 👛 Quite often, firms work on meagre fees. The reasons for this include small-ticket projects, lack of Architecture awareness and architecture firms’ inability to market themselves and stand out. Reason 4: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘱 📐 🥅 Most of the firms deal in design consultancy which includes planning and designing. While they overview construction, they don’t take charge of it. This selective scope of work leads to limited fees since the share of design in a project doesn’t typically exceed 10% of the total scope. Design consultancy made sense in the 1960s when projects were big and the project design requirements were notable. The strategy falls apart in today’s time because most firms deal in small retail projects where design requirements aren’t extraordinary. If you can, convince your firm to take turnkey projects. If you are thinking of starting your own firm, consider turnkeys. Break the pattern. Challenge the status quo. 📈 💰 #architects #architecture #architecturestudents

When we migrate, we often have misconceptions about our profession. Let’s debunk these myths. Tell us, did you identify with any of them? 🤔💭 5th myths about working in an architectural practice in Australia 🇦🇺 : 1. I must have my skills assessment in order to work in an architectural practice: The only 2 purposes of the skills assessment is migration or registration. Nobody will ask for your OQA to work in an office. 2. I can’t work in architecture if I hold a student visa: It’s harder but not impossible: part time roles are available and sometimes they can hire 2 part times instead of 1 full time. Don’t make this restriction to stop you start your career in Australia. 3. I don’t have to add any overseas experience to my resume or portfolio: Some people believe only Australian experience is relevant, but the reality is that sometimes we have done very similar jobs in our home country and we should be proud of showing that experience. 4. My overseas experience is not at the same level of the standard of Australia: We have realised with the years, that our Latam education has a high standard and added to our passionate Latin personality, it’s very likely you will stand out in any Australian environment. Do not doubt that your qualifications and Latam experience are more than enough to perform at any architectural practice in Australia. 5. I need to be fluent in English to work in architecture: Your transition into the professional workspace will be much harder without fluent English, but it’s not impossible. Most of our work is in silent documenting, measuring, sketching, rendering. Architects, do you respect your work? A few years back, one of dad’s friends was so happy that I completed my UG studies in architecture. I asked why and he said, “so that you can design for us for free!” I understand there is a free in freelance but not the one you expect it to be! There may be similar instances where people would ask for free designs or services quoting old cliché, “You will get exposure!” Here's the thing: My rent doesn't pay in exposure. Remember these things. 1.  You are the kingmaker here. You need to decide whether you want the project to be done by you free of cost or not. Not anyone else. 2. Free work undervalues you: Think of it like this: if they don't pay, they might not appreciate the effort you put in. You can't build a career on free work. Not just that, Free work Burns You Out. 3. Always fix a base rate for your work. Whether its architecture or writing or anything else, if you are unsure about fixing the rate, ask, research and find out the rate. This would make sure that you wouldn’t go below this amount for your work. 4. Decide the scope of your work first, in your first meeting itself. Write it or type it. Keep it clear. No more and no less. The money that you get for your work is the respect that you show towards your profession. On the other hand, when you start setting boundaries, 1.     You attract serious clients 2.     It empowers you in a huge way 3.     And my favourite, builds your reputation. Your time is valuable folks. You have invested years in education and honing your skills. Don't be afraid to discuss your rates and negotiate a fair price for your expertise.
