Ridgewood Pool has been a community gathering place for residents of Madison’s southwest side since 1958. When it became clear that the original structures had far outlived typical life expectancy, Ramaker was selected by the Ridgewood Pool Board of Directors to provide Aquatic, Architectural, and Structural Design and Engineering Services for a new 8-lane competition lap pool, diving well with three boards, and wading pool. At the close of the International Mass Timber Conference I am contemplating all of the great conversations I had, wonderful people I was able to see again, or meet for the first time, and all of the amazing new things I learned. It’s impossible to recount them all, but one quote form Andrew Waugh during his panel discussion has really stuck with me. He described Mass Timber projects as “engineering led architecture”. I can imagine out of context that for a designer this might sound like a recipe for something purely functional or lacking expression. But stated in context of a #masstimber structure, you start to understand that the purity of structural expression becomes the origin for beauty. Collaboration at the earliest stage of design becomes key to maintaining that purity. Understanding acutely the structural language so you can write the story of your building as a poem instead of a sprawling novel. This is a strategy that I really hope to explore further on future Mass Timber projects.
