On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we at the Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity & Social Determinants of Health reaffirm our commitment to addressing systemic disrespect and abuse (D&A) in maternal healthcare. Our quantitative and qualitative research in Southern India has illuminated how socio-economic inequalities and entrenched power hierarchies can lead to violations of women’s dignity and well-being during obstetric care. Translating the learning from this work, the Centre is spearheading the LaQshya Smriti initiative, a pilot project aimed at embedding Respectful Maternity Care within public hospitals in Bengaluru. This project seeks to build on the quality improvements achieved under the government’s LaQshya initiative by prioritising the agency, dignity, rights of mothers during childbirth. This ensures that every mother has a positive childbirth experience, promotes safe motherhood and lays a strong foundation for newborn health. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #RespectfulMaternityCare #HealthEquity #EndViolence #16Days #NoExcuse #internationaldayfortheeliminationofviolenceagainstwomen #health #universalhealthcare #publichealth #India #rcesdh #phfi #healthequity #researchforchange #empoweringcommunities #healthforall

The disparity in maternal health outcomes is alarming. In Minnesota, Black women make up 13% of the birthing population but account for 27% of pregnancy-associated deaths. It's crucial to address and eliminate these inequities in our healthcare system. #birthjustice #birthjusticeadvocacy #pernatal #maternity #culturalcare #maternalcare #healthequity #BirthJusticeCollaborative

Check out our new report on experiences of first time mothers in Bangladesh! -- We know that comprehensive interventions targeting adolescents and youth as they transition into parenthood can improve use of health services, including postnatal care and postpartum family planning—but that complex interventions can be hard to scale. A new report from the Connect project led by Save the Children and George Washington University details findings from a baseline study conducted in Bangladesh as part of a cluster-randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of lighter-touch interventions that have potential for sustainability through institutionalization in the existing government and community health system. The baseline data was collected through quantitative surveys with 2,308 first-time mothers ages 14-25 in two districts of Bangladesh. Findings highlight key factors that influence health service use among these young first-time mothers, including couple communication, reproductive decision-making agency, and knowledge gaps around FP and the purpose of PNC. Idea 20 : Anemia is a major public health concern in India with 58.6% of children, 53.2% of non-pregnant women, and 50.4% of pregnant women being affected by the condition. While the government of India has set up https://lnkd.in/dDHz-tT8, there isn’t much concrete action on ground. We need to rethink of food items in ration kit or supplements that can be given to women to address this problem at large scale. Bring in health experts from across the country to address this on an urgent basis. #100days100ideas

Reducing the need for cesarean sections is a major goal in improving maternal health, especially for minority women. In our second Bridging the Gap session, Dr. Juan Michelle Martin discussed how doulas are instrumental in lowering the likelihood of cesarean births and unnecessary interventions during labor. Despite similar risk factors, Black women are significantly more likely to undergo cesarean deliveries compared to their white counterparts. Doulas help by providing continuous support and advocacy, ensuring that women have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their care. With programs like the Better Birth Project, GWHI is helping to train doulas to collaborate with healthcare providers, further reducing unnecessary interventions and improving birth outcomes for all women. 💡 Join us in improving maternal health outcomes: Your support can make a life-saving difference. https://buff.ly/40MKU7d #CesareanAwareness #DoulaSupport #MaternalHealth #WomensHealth #BridgingTheGap

Fresh from the oven, this article blew my mind with the current data in the #UK for #womenshealth at The Lancet A must-read even if you are just a curious one. I saw some shocking data on women's health in the UK, and as a pelvic health physiotherapist and a patient of this system, I am deeply concerned. The UK has the largest gender health gap of the #G20 nations, and women's health has been declining at a faster rate than men's. #maternitycare experiences have worsened, gynaecology waiting lists have surged, and black women face 4x more risk of dying in childbirth compared with white women. Despite the Women's Health Strategy launch, inadequate funding and a lack of focus on non-reproductive health issues leave much to be desired where #noncommunicablediseases are totally out of the scope. We need urgent, comprehensive action to address these disparities and prioritize women's health across the board. The upcoming government must fully commit to funding and implementing the #WomensHealthStrategy and tackling the #socialdeterminants that perpetuate #genderhealthinequalities. #WomensHealth #GenderHealthGap #PelvicHealth #HealthcareInequality #NHS

These images speak volumes of the two years since the fall of #RoeVWade. 👎 14 states have enacted near-total #AbortionBans. 👎 19 states have banned #telemedicine #abortion 👎 Number of #abortions has gone up. The number of #abortions across #America actually increased, with increasingly accessible medication #abortion. But the fundamental realities of post-#Dobbs #America remain grim. Large #reproductive #care deserts with no #abortion providers for hundreds of miles have emerged. Pregnant #women struggle to get necessary medical care as doctors fear the repercussions of providing it. All of this is exacerbating long-standing inequities. A good article on the after efffects of RoeVsWade. The scary part is how many policy makers were waiting for this overturn and were ready to implement regressive laws! #nobodyautonomy #reprodicuctiverights

🌍 India's Hospital Birth Costs: A Growing Concern 💰 A recent study reveals the financial hurdles families face when choosing institutional deliveries in India. Despite various policy efforts, out-of-pocket expenses (OOPE) and catastrophic health expenditures (CHE) remain a significant burden, particularly for economically disadvantaged groups. Key findings include: 📊 Regional Disparities: The financial strain of childbirth varies widely across states, highlighting the uneven implementation of healthcare services. 💼 Socioeconomic Impact: Wealthier households benefit from lower expenses, while vulnerable populations continue to struggle with high costs. 🚑 Call to Action: To enhance maternal and child health outcomes, it's crucial to reduce OOPE and CHE. Policymakers must prioritize resource allocation in underserved regions and strengthen healthcare infrastructure. Addressing these financial barriers is essential for achieving equitable healthcare for all citizens. 👉 Click the link to read more about this pressing issue! #EquityInHealth #HealthEconomics #Healthcare #India #MaternalHealth #Publications #RegulatoryAgencies #MarketAccess #MarketAccessToday

As I return to work after the (safe and healthy) birth of my daughter, stories like this bring home the importance of CARE's continued fight for safe maternal health globally. Before the conflict in Tigray, 90% of mothers received prenatal care, and more than 70% benefited from skilled deliveries. Today, women are transporting each other to clinics in homemade stretchers. CARE's Women Lead in Emergencies approach is bringing women together to come up with innovative solutions, but long term change is needed. #GenderJustice #Maternalhealth #SRHR https://lnkd.in/eByRRqeR
