I hope to share reflections, stories, and experiences on how the interplay between the legitimising power of measurement as evidence, the nature of expertise versus experience lead to informing how resources are distributed. While I hope to focus largely on public health, I hope to connect these reflections to larger trends in philanthropic practice globally. How do genealogies of knowledge travel between sectors and communities of practice? And how can focused approaches to measurement connect to larger structural, macro-level shifts needed to address growing inequalities, a topic much debated in global public health?

🔁 Our third challenge panel at this year's #BIGSummit24 discussed the changing roles of citizens in health. Covering topics including the #carbonfootprint of the NHS, limited funding, outdated infrastructures and the need for private sector investment, this challenge proposed energy cooperatives and integrating sustainability into all health initiatives. "The problem is, we’re expecting patients to come to us for either primary or secondary care, and we’re expecting them to immediately have trust in us, take the health messages and then use those messages effectively. What we’ve learned is that we’ve got problems all along the line. Number one is to engage with voluntary and charitable organisations. Number two is when you’ve made those links to try and be in people’s shoes." Catch up on what was discussed by Sam Mason (South London Partnership), Nicola Thomas (London South Bank University), Dr Andrew Brown (Croydon BME and Philip Crilly (Kingston University) in our full session write-up 👇 https://bcn.to/bcsy

Participatory Action Research is an excellent modality to obtain ground level input and 'buy in' from a community when designing interventions that are focused on the 'felt needs' of the community being focused upon. Participatory Action Research in Health (PAR-H) is an innovative approach that involves active participation of community members in health research. In rural India, since quite a while, various NGOs have been creatively implementing PAR-H at local levels. To promote and preserve health of communities , integrating PAR-H at the early stages is essential, prior to initiating any interventions that may be planned by the Govt or by philanthropic agencies or NGOs utilizing CSR funds. Community Involvement:- PAR-H involves engaging community members, including patients, healthcare providers, and local stakeholders, in the research process. It recognizes their expertise and lived experiences. Action-Oriented: Unlike traditional research, PAR-H focuses on practical action and bringing about sustainable change. It aims to address real-world problems and improve health outcomes. Cyclic Process: PAR-H follows a cyclical approach, involving cycles of reflection, data collection, action, and evaluation. Participants actively contribute to decision-making at each stage. Equity and Empowerment: PAR-H seeks to reduce health inequities by empowering marginalized communities. It promotes ownership and agency among participants. Local Context: PAR-H is context-specific, adapting to the unique needs and challenges of selected settings. It encourages locally relevant solutions. By integrating PAR-H with future healthcare interventions, we can create meaningful change and improve healthcare sustainably. 🤝 Inviting enthusiastic young Public Health professionals to consider this assignment where you can be the 'pivot' for a PAR-H project which will be the gateway to many more meaningful interventions in the future. Those with an MD in Community Medicine (and not just MPH or MBA graduates), in early career stages are welcome. Did you know that nearly 30% of people in the Dominican Republic lack access to essential healthcare services? This is a critical issue, especially in rural areas where medical facilities are scarce. The World Bank recently approved a $190 million project to tackle this crisis, aiming to enhance healthcare quality for vulnerable communities. Organizations like Partners for Rural Health in the Dominican Republic (PRHDR) were pivotal to achieve this by providing care and education to over 2,000 patients in 15 mountain villages. Collab with Kat is proud to have supported PRHDR’s fundraising strategy in 2020, aiding their crucial work in these communities. Click on the article below to learn more about what’s being done to grant access to healthcare services in the Dominican Republic. https://lnkd.in/gmyu5kpq. #HealthcareAccess #CommunityHealth #RuralDevelopment #CollabWithKat #Worldbank

Empowering Tribal Communities: Health Education and Employment At Every Infant Matters, we believe in empowering communities by involving them in the solution. In this video, our dedicated Community Healthcare Worker, Sh. Devu from Silvassa, is seen educating tribal communities about iron deficiency. By addressing its signs and symptoms, promoting iron-rich diets, and emphasizing daily hygiene, Sh. Devu ensures that critical health information reaches those who need it the most. What makes this initiative truly impactful is our approach of hiring and training local individuals. As members of the same community, they bring invaluable knowledge of the culture, language, and unique challenges, making the delivery of health projects highly effective. By providing employment to local tribal people, we not only empower them but also strengthen their role as changemakers within their ecosystem. “Our commitment lies in fostering sustainable health solutions by building on the strengths of local communities,” says Dr. Radhika Batra, Founder and President. By blending local insights with professional training, we create a sustainable model of community-based healthcare. This approach not only ensures better health outcomes but also builds a sense of ownership and pride within the community, fostering a lasting impact that benefits future generations. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our CEO, Dr. Shelly Batra, our donors, and local authorities for supporting these initiatives. Together, we are making healthcare accessible and impactful in underserved regions. The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is hosting a free event on "How social prescribing is revolutionising the way we look at health and wellbeing". They will explore how social prescribing can support patients to improve their health and wellbeing, with an emphasis on the function that it provides within a healthcare setting. You'll gain an increased understanding of the role that social prescribing has in providing a truly person-centred approach within health by exploring the evidence, case studies and innovations across the country. So what does this mean for planning? Simple, when planning your health hubs, don't just calculate GP space requirements, include space for Allied Health Care Practitioners and Social Prescribing. This way you are increasing capacity but also enhancing and expanding care in the community that would be best placed to tackle current and looming health and social care service challenges. It also increases the long term viability and sustainability of community health care (yes, GP's and Pharmacies do close and consolidate), and you create improved working conditions helping to retain and entice staff. Sign up now, they have limited places. https://lnkd.in/eJ67Sa3G
