The IT industry is rapidly evolving but principles stay the same.

As a software engineer, your north star should be delivering value every day. Constantly be evaluating what you're working on and assessing the value proposition. If you can't see the value to customers, colleagues or company, speak up. Understand the why. Your effort is an incredibly valuable resource which you ultimately control. It sounds obvious, but it's very easy to lose sight of the big picture when you're deep in the implementation details.

In a moment of reflection, I realized: the measure of a skilled software engineer lies not in the ability to comprehend large and complex systems but in their ability to simplify complexity, reduce size, and increase efficiency. Though this insight may not be new, it resonated with me anew today. It's a reminder of the art in our craft - simplicity amidst complexity. (illustration by DALLE)

Do this to take your mind from Junior to Senior developer: Focus on the customers, product and team. 3 questions you could ask yourself: 1. When was the last time I shared knowledge with the team? 2. When was the last time I asked the product team WHY we are building something? 3. When was the last time I discovered a bottleneck in my team and improved it? Senior engineers are multipliers of the team.

As a Software Engineer in a startup environment I see myself thinking from the business perspective before implementing something in the code I need to ask business questions and get clarifications before writing out the logic

Before jumping into solutions, take time to fully understand the problem – you’ll write better code and save time in the long run.

💡As a software engineer, providing the best solution is important. Discussing a task with your team or a senior member is important when you start working on it. This discussion can help you think about potential corner cases. Lack of discussion on any task can cause trouble in the future, while proper discussion can lead to more learning and better solutions. To ensure everyone is on the same page, make sure to discuss before starting work. Feel free to share your thoughts/experiences below!

While it's crucial to avoid over-engineering, remember that flexibility in software design is a key factor in adapting to unforeseen requirements. Invest time in understanding design patterns, which can save countless hours of refactoring in the future.
