How do we actually know safety is working in an organization? … Safety is more than just following rules or meeting requirements. The real question is: how can we tell when an organization is truly safe? Safety can’t be done just for show because it needs a culture where everyone cares about keeping each other safe, not just when someone’s watching. Here are some signs that safety is truly working: • Spotting Hazards Early: A safe organization always looks for and fixes risks before they turn into bigger problems. • Clear Reporting and Action: Employees are encouraged to report dangers or near-misses without fear. Issues are dealt with, and everyone is kept informed. • Everyone is Responsible: Safety is everyone’s job, from the top leaders to the newest workers. They all have the right mindset and the tools they need to keep the workplace safe. • Leaders Set the Example: Good leaders don’t just talk about safety—they show it through their actions. They get involved in safety efforts and prove how important it is. • Always Improving: A strong safety culture doesn’t stand still. It regularly updates and improves its safety practices as things change. Safety isn’t something that only matters when people are looking. If safety is real, it’s part of the way everyone works and thinks, all the time. The BIG QUESTION HERE is, how do we know safety is really working?
