Sending this message of light and strength to Los Angeles and beyond. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. King – a visionary leader whose unwavering fight for justice and equality transformed history. His words remind us of the importance of speaking up and advocating for change, especially in industries where diverse voices have long been underrepresented. At Ramo, we recognize the vital role Black creators, artists, and industry leaders play in shaping the entertainment world. Their stories inspire, challenge norms, and push boundaries. As a firm, we are committed to promoting diversity and representation – not only within the legal profession but across the entertainment industry we serve. PSA: Black creatives exist. Black voices and perspectives matter. There are Black professionals who are excelling in your industry. If you find yourself in a space or on a stage virtual and/or IRL or in a board room, where there are no Black people or there is only ONE token Black person, ask why? And if the answer is “we couldn’t find anyone” or there simply isn’t an answer or response to the call out—🚩🚩🚩 that’s a red flag and there is probably a need for reformation.

Psychological Safety at work!!! This is such an important point. First, we have all experienced the “buffoonery “ of diversity and representation without inclusion. Our current Government is given as an example. Second, leaders, when you get around to recruiting “the first….” into your organisation and especially to your board or to senior leader roles what do you do to protect their mental well-being? My personal experience having been “the first” in 99% of my roles was being thrown to a pack of wolves who thought my Black body was there for sport rather than because of my talent and the opportunity for collaboration. It’s horrific and not everyone survives. Talk to me or any racial equity consultant if you want to prevent and/or repair this psychological assault on global majority employees. We deserve to be protected. The Equalities Act 2010 says so. And we are not the ones creating the hostile environment. #psychological safety #racial mediation
“Too many times, Black performers – particularly Black actresses – are left to face the storm of online abuse after committing the crime of getting a job on their own.” I named this in 2022 in conversation with Afua Hirsch Adjoa Andoh and more at The Conduit discussing representation in entertainment and film. It’s all well and good condemning racist comments regarding the response to Francesca Amewudah-Rivers being cast as Juliet alongside Tom Holland in Romeo and Juliet - but merely ‘condemning racist comments’ does nothing to meaningfully address racism. What are Jamie Lloyd and other production houses, theatre companies, agents, talent managers doing to adequately safeguard and ensure the psychological safety of black talent AND black staff, when castings for shows are announced, particularly in roles that are typically aligned with white norms? What meaningful support and wrap around care is being provided? What work are they doing in the arts and at home to address racism beyond condemning it? We have a serious problem with systemic racism in this country it is violent and damaging - merely condemning racist comments doesn’t address it. This happens time and time again and white management and companies need to be doing a whole lot more. Click play for my take: Read the full Guardian piece where over 800 Black women and non-binary actors are speaking up about abuse and lack of support they receive. https://lnkd.in/efDkTzAN

It's #BlackHistoryMonth, and this year's theme is Reclaiming Narratives. It's an invitation for Black communities to reshape how Black history is perceived and taught by stepping into the role of storyteller, historian or custodian. This month we'll be putting a spotlight on the heroes (known and unsung) who have made an indelible impact on our communities and business landscapes. Spoiler: They may even include some of our own colleagues... Who will you be celebrating? #blackbusinesses #blackownedbusinesses #BHM #ReclaimingNarratives

A lot of #companies and #organizations celebrate their historical #successes via their website, mission statements, #marketingcommunication, and #contentmarketing. However, this can backfire if historical #marginalization is omitted/not mentioned, thereby threatening the #social #identity of the (historically) marginalized groups. In their PNAS study, Laura Wallace, Stephanie Reeves, and Stephen Spencer, Ed.D. show that exposing Black participants to an organization that celebrates their history (vs. the present) decreases their belonging and intentions to participate in the organization Why? Since they expect biased treatment in the organization. Interestingly, the negative effect of celebrating history disappears when organizations have a history of Black people in power, implying that the negative effects are most likely when organizations are (assumed) to be majority-White and have treated Black Americans poorly. Interesting insights regarding insincere or selective self-praise. Study link in the first comment.

FINDING YOUR VOICE AS A BLACK ARTIST ⬇ In the dynamic landscape of the entertainment industry, finding your voice and establishing your presence as a Black performer can feel like navigating uncharted territory. Whilst the life of an actor/dancer/model/singer is a beautiful creative journey, it is without a doubt marked by glass ceilings and token-hiring, and the relentless pursuit of authenticity amidst the valleys of expectations and stereotypes. Through the power of personal branding, you can learn to establish yourself as a Black artist and truly learn the importance of finding one's voice. Embracing your authenticity isn't just about showcasing your talents on Social Media; it's more often about trusting yourself as an artist and reclaiming your narrative (which, yes, can feel like challenging the status quo!) Whether it's through breaking stereotypes, embracing cultural heritage, or championing diverse narratives, each step we take as Black performers is a statement of our resilience and empowerment. In a world where representation matters more than ever, it is crucial for Black performers to carve out their own paths. By owning our narratives and amplifying our voices, we not only pave the way for future generations but also redefine the standards of excellence in the industry.

How can businesses and colleagues be effective allies to Black employees year-round? #BlackHistoryMonth #LinkedInNewsUK Greetings Priscillia. Thank you for this invitation to contribute my opinion. I consider this question as a continued demonstration of neo-colonialism. Such questions reinforce the ideology that Black people need help from the 'other' privileged. I don't think Black people need allies to promote effectiveness in neither business or with relationships with colleagues. We don't need assistence from others. We need predudices, bias and criticisms (racism) to be eradicated. Therefore, I suggest the question is: 'What allyship is needed for 'others' to remove their racist thoughts and behaviour. Best wishes, Samantha Shakes.
