I have been working at Marrickville Legal Centre for 9 years and have never witnessed the type of demand for our services that we are experiencing now. Conditions are hard out there and they're becoming increasingly harder for those that are already struggling. We have an amazing group of staff and volunteers who go above and beyond to try to meet this need but sadly, like many community legal centres, we do not have the resources to help everyone. This isn't fair. People should be able to engage effectively with our justice system irrespective of their level of income. This is why we launched the Low Bono Legal Service (LBLS) in 2020. The LBLS service model offers affordable fixed-fee representation for those who cannot afford private lawyers but are ineligible to access free legal support. Since its inception, the LBLS has assisted 364 clients, recovering $3.4 million in entitlements. The fees generated through this service have enabled MLC to employ an additional lawyer, which means we can help more people. We are also working closely with Women's Legal Service QLD, the EDO and Microsoft Gold Partner, Barhead Solutions, to develop a new legal practice management system called Consensus for Purpose. Built on Microsoft’s Dynamics 365, Consensus for Purpose will streamline the entire client journey and reduce the administrative burden through automation and AI. This will free up our limited resources to focus on legal work and speed up the process for those needing help. These projects capture the innovative culture at MLC that is forever exploring new ways to help more people. We will never receive enough funds from government or donations to meet demand, which is why we need to be more creative in how to do more with less. This year we’re asking for donations to help advance these projects. Every dollar donated to MLC goes further, ensuring that more individuals receive the legal support they desperately need. As I walked on Monday - Chapa Kalesa ultra walk- to raise awareness for and around blood donation, I got to interact with a few Kenyans during my few stop overs. I observed high levels of blood donation illiteracy. (Yes, I just made that phrase up and it works 😁) 1. The number of Kenyans who are unaware about blood donation in general, anecdotally, is high. 2. Poor awareness of the donation centres in proximal distance. 3. Poor correlation between the need for donation and the impact and role they can play in addressing the challenge. One Kiambu resident asked me 'why?' in response to me challenging him to consider donating blood. 4. Questions abound inspired by myths and misconceptions around blood donations. 5. There's apathy fuelled by 'claims' of blood trade. 6. Unavailability of blood and blood products for transfusion for patients whose relatives/friends have donated blood at one time or other has been effective in reducing repeat donations. 7. The price that is surcharged transfusion patients is interpreted as blood trade for blood donated for free. In conclusion, there is a great need for national strategic intervention programmes to address this illiteracy and apathy with the objective of increasing blood collections across the country.
