I honor my heritage, my ancestors, and my culture! 🤎🪶 “#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth is about to come to an end but that doesn’t mean you don’t have all the resources to educate yourself about my peoples year round, the first indigenous people who discovered Columbus when he stumbled upon the Americas. The Arawak-Taíno heritage still lives on in generations along the Caribbean and South America. We honor our ancestors through culture, language, food and ritual. Did you know so many of the words today come from the Arawak-Taíno language? When you say Hurricane (Juracan), when you say Canoe (Canoa), when you say Barbecue (Barbacoa), Hammock (Hamaca) know you are speaking words derived from my ancestors. It’s in the food we eat, in the boricua culture. We were once told we were “extinct” or “abolished”. We’re not. We’re still here and our ancestors will live on as long as we continue the Taíno narrative. They fought hard for their lives and our future. We know the tales, we know the history. We’re rebels fighting against colonization. We still are today. Let’s honor those who fought for our future. They deserve to be remembered.” -Elle Jimenez . . . . #wakeuptaíno #Taíno #Taino #TaínoDaka #TaínoDNA #boricua #borikén #boriken #borinquen #culture #cultura #culturematters #folklore #ancestors #heritage #culturalsensitivity #culturalcompetence #indigenouspeoples Picture by NativProductions
