New Post: A new ‘Silent Hill’ game has been released for free on PS5 - https://lnkd.in/gyfVv_Jf - The Silent Hill franchise has received a new game, available for free on PlayStation 5 right now. READ MORE: Mikael Hedberg makes video game nightmares Silent Hill: The Short Message was released last night (January 30) during the PlayStation State of Play. The game was actually originally leaked way back in 2022, with a South Korean board rating spotted for the game but no real indication of when it might release or if it was actually still in development. As it turns out, the title was still in development and has been released for free exclusively on PlayStation 5. In a new PlayStation blog post, producer Motoi Okamato explained the thinking behind this new Silent Hill game. The game is fairly short, weighing in at around two hours, but shows off the potential future of the Silent Hill franchise beyond the already announced games such as the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake and the upcoming Annapurna Interactive published Silent Hill: Townfall. “We wanted to make a new, modern Silent Hill. As part of that we explored how we could incorporate contemporary problems. We ended up looking at how modern youth communicate online and through phones, and the role that could play in a psychological horror story,” Okamato wrote. Okamato also elaborated on the subtitle of the game, explaining what the ‘short message’ is supposed to represent in the game, and why Konami chose to have young characters as the focus. “We chose to set our story around young characters like this. Characters who are genuinely suffering and lost, where even one more minor setback can wind up pushing them even deeper into a spiral of anguish. But, in the same way, even the smallest kindness can be the thing that pulls them back from the brink. And that’s what also makes this game a message, from us to everyone living with that ever-present conflict and pressure”. In other gaming news, Death Stranding 2 has confirmed a 2025 release date along with the subtitle for the game. READ MORE: ‘The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum’ hands-off preview: precious story, lacklustre stealth Metacritic aggregates reviews of TV, film, books and music and then gives them an average score. As part of its end of year summary, the website has shared the 10 worst reviewed games released in 2023. “Any titles with fewer than seven reviews from professional critics are excluded,” it explained, with the list only including titles that are “major enough” to get reviewed by multiple publications. Topping the list of worst games is Daedalic’s The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum with a score of just 34 out of 100, making it “generally unfavourable”. The stealth platformer is set between the events of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, and offers an original story for Gollum. According to the list, it’s the “worst Lord Of The Rings game adaptation in history” with reviews calling it “dull” and “tedious” as well as pointing out game-breaking bugs, terrible visuals and criticising the extensive knowledge of Tolkien’s work that’s needed to properly grasp the plot. “At any rate, it’s a complete package: completely terrible,” wrote Metacritic. Flashback prequel Flashback 2 was the second worst reviewed game of 2023, followed by Refugium Games’ Greyhill Incident. Sci-fi horror shooter Quantum Error also features in the top five alongside Fairyship Games’ Testament: The Order of High-Human. The top ten worst reviewed games of 2023 are: 1. New Post: First ‘Dragon’s Dogma 2’ patch improves character customisation and lets you restart game - https://lnkd.in/g4D9B6xX - Capcom has shared the patch notes for the first update to Dragon’s Dogma 2, which will improve graphics and character customisation. READ MORE: ‘Dragon’s Dogma 2’ review: you can’t go wrong with this adventurous masterwork Launched last week, Dragon’s Dogma 2 fans experienced lag during busy areas of the game due to the power needed to render each character. The first patch, which is due for release “soon”, will allow console players to set a cap of 30 frames per second while “future patches will help improve the performance of the frame rate.” As for PC players, the 1.1 patch will “optimise DLSS Super Resolution performance when activated. Additionally, it addresses and resolves a previously reported bug where certain models are displayed in low quality under specific settings.” The new patch will also allow Dragon’s Dogma 2 players to start a new game, even if save data already exists. As it stands, restarting your Dragon’s Dogma 2 progress is a lengthy process but last week, Capcom confirmed it was “looking at” making it easier. To all Dragon's Dogma 2 players! We're planning to release patches including the following updates and fixes in the near future, and will release them as soon as they are ready for distribution on each platform. Thank you for your patience and support! pic.twitter.com/aQoV3URH4C — Dragon's Dogma (@DragonsDogma) March 25, 2024 The 1.1 update will change the number of art of metamorphosis items available at pawn guilds to 99, making character customisation easier while the quest that allows players to acquire their own dwelling will be made available earlier in the game. A number of bug and text fixes will also be introduced. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S users will also be able to switch motion blur and ray tracing on and off in the options menu following the update. However, according to Capcom, ”these options will not affect the frame rate significantly. Frame rate improvements are planned for future updates.” While a launch date for the 1.1 update has yet to be confirmed, a number of modders have created mods that work around the controversial number of microtransactions available in Dragon’s Dogma 2. In other news, the release date for Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail has been confirmed, coming one week after Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree launches. New Post: ‘Rock Band 4’ updates to halt as developer focuses on ‘Fortnite Festival’ - https://lnkd.in/g-TT-3FJ - After eight years of weekly releases, Rock Band 4 DLC updates are stopping next week. READ MORE: ‘Persona 3 Reload’ is shaping up to be a must-play remake The news was announced in a post on developer Harmonix‘s blog. “After over 8 years of weekly Rock Band 4 DLC releases, we’re here to let you know that January 25 will be the last DLC release of the RB4 era,” the post explains. “All other live services will continue as normal, including Rivals seasons , online play, and everything else.” Rock Band 4 was released in 2015, and DLC has been released weekly for the game since it was launched. Over 3,000 songs have been released over the years as DLC, with the soundtracks from previous Rock Band titles available to people who have previously imported the licences for the games. The official announcement also explained exactly what to expect from Harmonix in the future, now that they won’t be working on Rock Band 4. Fortnite Festival. CREDIT: Epic Games “Looking ahead, the Harmonix team has been hard at work over the last two years to develop Fortnite Festival, which brings rhythm action gaming (and more) to the Fortnite ecosystem. It’s free to play, we have a rotating selection of songs that you can play (for free) anytime,” the blog post explains. “Fortnite Festival is the place to be; and with support for RB4 instruments coming, this is not the time to hang up your guitars just yet…” Fortnite Festival, Harmonix’s latest game, was released in December 2023 and is completely free. Players can team up with their friends, using skins purchased in Fortnite to represent themselves in the band. Unlike Rock Band 4, however, songs are rotated so that there are constantly different songs available. In other gaming news, a new Xbox system software update has fixed a save-destroying Baldur’s Gate 3 bug. New Post: Is ‘Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’ coming to Game Pass? - https://lnkd.in/g_3-E_tU - Is Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League coming to Game Pass? With Rocksteady‘s latest game almost here, 9 years after Batman: Arkham Knight reception to the evolving world of Metropolis and the radical shift from the tone and gameplay Rocksteady built the Arkham-verse on, many players are keen to know if they can jump in at a discounted price or with a subscription. READ MORE: ‘Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’ Joker release date, abilities, and more Warner Brothers Games hasn’t been a huge supporter of services like PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass. However, Gotham Knights did come to both after its middling reception in October 2022. Unfortuantely, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is not coming to Game Pass when it launches, as Microsoft has announced the full lineup for the service up until February 6, 2024, and the game is not included. If you are looking to play something with a Game Pass subscription, Persona 3 Reload will arrive on February 2, 2024, alongside the indie title Anuchard on February 6, 2024. Plus, games like Resident Evil 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and more were added in January as a part of the January 2024 Game Pass games. There is still a chance that the game will show up on the service down the line in 2024 or 2025, especially if the mixed reception to the third-person shooter so far results in poor sales or if the seasonal content struggles to hook existing players. Warner Brothers Games has a track record of doing this and they did throw Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga onto Xbox Game Pass after launch too. If you are keen to grab Rocksteady’s latest title, then you can play from January 30, 2024 thanks to Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League early access and prepare your PC with the Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League PC requirements. New Post: ‘XDefiant’ delay isn’t down to devs trying to copy modern ‘Call Of Duty’ games - https://lnkd.in/gsvJGyaA - XDefiant’s executive producer has hit back at reports that the first-person shooter has been delayed due to devs trying to copy modern Call Of Duty games. READ MORE: ‘Dragon’s Dogma 2’ is a Game Of The Year contender – and it’s all thanks to grabbing First announced in 2021, XDefiant is a 6v6 multiplayer shooter that brings together characters from various Ubisoft franchises like The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and Splinter Cell. XDefiant launched an open beta at the start of 2023 but the game was delayed indefinitely in September, after failing a number of console quality control tests. “I know it’s a bummer that we are moving the date especially since we seemed so close and that for many the game is great and they can’t wait to play but I’d rather ship a game that is better for everyone,” said executive producer Mark Rubin at the time. Earlier this month, it was reported that the continued delays to XDefiant were down to the team “chasing” Call Of Duty and copying features found in Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone. However, Rubin has hit back at those claims, calling them a “major eyeroll”. Just FYI, nothing about our delay is due to any new features. In fact not much has changed from a gameplay standpoint. The delay has been due to the tech issues we've talked about. Whoever said chasing CoD in Tom's report was major eyeroll. — Mark Rubin (@PixelsofMark) March 23, 2024 “FYI, nothing about our delay is due to any new features. In fact not much has changed from a gameplay standpoint. The delay has been due to the tech issues we’ve talked about,” he wrote on social media. “We’ve said in the past that we were aiming at a different time in first-person shooter history. i.e. older Call Of Duty games. So are we ‘chasing’ older Call Of Duty games? to some degree but we don’t want to be like what the newer Call Of Duty titles are like,” he continued. Rubin went on to say that an update on the release date for XDefiant should be coming this week. “I know we’ve been silent because to be honest there isn’t much to talk about. I know people just want to see the game ship and so do we,” he explained, with the team working on “major technical issues” that appeared with the scaling of the game. “I can’t wait to ship just so we don’t have to talk about ship dates anymore and we can talk about more important stuff like gameplay balancing or new content/modes/maps,” he added. In other news, Capcom has shared the patch notes for the first update to Dragon’s Dogma 2, which will hopefully improve graphics and character customisation. New Post: ‘Fortnite’ Festival XP glitch lets players level up ridiculously quickly - https://lnkd.in/gcVKfuiW - A Fortnite Festival XP glitch has been discovered, meaning players have been levelling up incredibly quickly through the new game mode. READ MORE: Best FPS games: what’s the best shooter you can play in 2023? Fortnite Festival kicked off on Saturday (December 9), and brought a Rock Band-style game mode that lets fans play along to the likes of The Weekend, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Fall Out Boy. Yet the new game mode has also introduced an exploit that’s letting players gain hundreds of levels without jumping into Fortnite‘s traditional battle royale matches. While we won’t be detailing the exact steps needed to carry this out, it involves activating the ‘Play on the Jam Stage for 20 minutes’ daily quest and joining a friend who’s already at the stage. Due to the bug, you’ll automatically gain a level every time you rejoin them thanks to the Fortnite Festival XP glitch. The Weeknd in ‘Fortnite Festival’. Credit: Epic Games At time of writing (December 11), Epic Games has yet to acknowledge the bug. However, it’s worth noting that players should only attempt to abuse the exploit at their own risk, as the developer may issue resets or account punishments for those who use it to get ahead. Elsewhere, Fortnite Festival has proven a hit for more than just its XP glitch. Songs by Lady Gaga, The White Stripes and Nine Inch Nails are now available to play in the rhythm-based mode, which has been created by Rock Band developer Harmonix. Looking ahead, more support for Fortnite Festival is on the way. In a recent blog post, Epic Games confirmed that adding support for instrument controllers (such as those from Rock Band or Guitar Hero) is a “priority” for the team heading into 2024. Meanwhile, a major collaboration with Lego has brought yet another mode to Fortnite. New Post: George R.R. Martin wasn’t involved in ‘Elden Ring’ expansion ‘Shadow Of The Erdtree’ - https://lnkd.in/gt_GcD_e - It has been confirmed that Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin did not contribute any new ideas to Elden Ring expansion Shadow Of The Erdtree. READ MORE: ‘Elden Ring’ review: Miyazaki’s masterpiece exceeds every expectation Martin assisted with “a bit of worldbuilding” for Elden Ring, after being contacted by FromSoftware, helping to create “the backstory and history” for the title despite not being a huge fan of video games. The “offer was just too exciting to refuse,” he explained. Developers wanted “a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create,” which Martin created before it was “handed off to my new friends in Japan, and they took it from there.” In a new interview with Famitsu , game director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that Martin was not involved in the creation of upcoming expansion Shadow Of The Erdtree. “Martin’s involvement is the same as in the main title. The world and story of the DLC was inspired by the mythology that he penned just as in the main title, and was created thus. To be more precise, what was created this time is part of what was created from the inspiration we took from his mythology for the main title. So, there was no additional writing done specifically for the DLC,” he explained. Shadow Of The Erdtree is set for release June 21 with FromSoftware sharing a new gameplay trailer earlier this week. “Guided by Empryean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Land of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot,” reads the official description. “In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps with ulterior motives.” Miyazaki also teased a sequel to Elden Ring. “We don’t want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future,” he said. In other news, The Word Alive have re-recorded their 2018 League Of Legends anthem ‘Rise’ to celebrate its fifth anniversary.
