I didn’t start my career in Tech Sales, I moved into Tech after working in Finance for 4 years. 🤓 These are the 3 key steps I took when I was first trying to break into Tech: 1. Do some self-discovery: ‘Tech sales’ refers to a lot of roles at a lot of companies, figure out the answers to key questions like what industry do you want to work in, what persona do you want to sell to, what size of company do you want to work for? 🔎 2. Create a target list of interesting companies + people: No need to boil the ocean, create a list of 10 companies you’d love to work for and identify 3-5 people (at varying seniority levels) at each company that you’d be interested in speaking with 📋 3. Network: Once you’ve compiled your list of companies and people, begin reaching out via LinkedIn to set up as many conversations as possible and each conversation should lead to another conversation (“Who else would you recommend I speak with?” can be a great final question for informational interviews) 👥 While the transition was challenging at first, it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. 😊 What have you found helpful when looking for a new role and what would you add to this list? 🤔 #sales #opportunities #brand30

Never compromise your career advancement out of desperation. I receive messages from individuals with significant sales experience seeking entry-level roles. Remember, don't settle for less just because it seems convenient right now; you might regret it later. Don't be discouraged by the notion that transitioning to tech sales is too challenging. Highlight your transferable skills from your previous sales experience, showcasing your ability to close deals effectively. Your expertise is valuable; don't underestimate it. Don't let your talent go to waste. If you do, it's on you. I work with some very cool tech companies. I get the chance to see what's behind the curtain everyday and often am part of the architecting of future initiatives. Like "hiring" for a sales role. And I know a lot of good sales people. Some roles do get posted on recruiting platforms and some are just "handpicked" people that I know will work out great. Recently, I called on one of a misunderstood high potential that was let go from a company. He had worked a few years for an organization that didn't deserve him, that has zero to little growth. I know his potential and was a big fan of his. I offered him to come meet with founders of a tech company I work with. They are about to post a job and I told him " I will get you in the room, I am very confident that you will do the rest and be succesful in getting an offer, but my role will be limited to getting you in the room". He was very excited. Thought it was a great plan and seemed genuinely excited to work with someone I trusted. I asked him to pick 2 specific dates that would work for him. He never called. Working in the wrong company, in the wrong environment, managed by the wrong people will hurt you at the core. If you are in those roles, leave. For your own sake and morale. And for your career. This applies to sales people but also to anyone that is accepting a raw deal. Don't. Do. It.
