🏠 Contracts signed for construction of 72 houses in Monaghan   Monaghan County Council’s Housing section is pleased to announce that following a competitive tendering process, GEDA Construction have been chosen to construct 72 Houses in Monaghan town across two sites, namely Slí Lorcan, Latlorcan (51) and Slí na Coille, Mullaghmatt, Monaghan (21). The Housing Section are utilising an accelerated design and build contract which encourages Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). It is pleasing that GEDA have teamed up with a local timber frame manufacturing company IJM Timber Engineering Ltd to deliver these houses, with the first phase being delivered within 12 months. Speaking at the signing of the contracts Chief Executive for Monaghan County Council, Mr. Robert Burns stated “This is a good news story for Monaghan in that it will develop two former unfinished housing estates,  for much needed social housing, and I am particularly pleased to see the Council embracing modern methods of construction to optimise the use of off-site manufacturing materials, techniques and processes to increase the pace and scale of housing delivery”. Cathaoirleach for Monaghan County Council Cllr. Paul Gibbons stated “I would like to commend the Housing Section for their efforts in bringing these two projects to this stage and I look forward to having the houses completed and allocated to those on the social housing waiting list in Monaghan”. Since its inception in December 2023, the Commission has quickly expanded to one of the state's busiest construction hubs, south of Sydney. With over 4,000 active sites, Illawarra Shoalhaven is ideal for piloting the Commission’s regional strategy, enhancing site audits, and faster complaint responses. Compliance inspectors can now issue building orders for defects and ensure repairs before project completion. This ensures regional homes match metropolitan quality. New regional resources, alongside iCIRT's independent builder ratings, boost consumer confidence in construction standards. Over 100 iCIRT-rated builders already operate in NSW. it's not clear if these are intended to be affordable homes or what the intention is or how they fit with the wider context of good urban design principles but appreciate the approach taken has delivered more quickly than standard delivery. The main reason for this (better coordination) seems logical. In fact one could call it a good example of planning. A second reason given was having council building inspectors on site and using the same ones that resulted in strong relationships that enable difficult conversations. But how do you avoid being captured by the developer in such approaches?

"Master Builders Australia chief executive Denita Wawn said while the strong rebound in new detached house construction was welcomed by the industry, there was still a long way to go to reach the target of 1.2 million homes. “If building activity continues at this pace, Australia will commence construction on just over 825,000 new homes over the next five years.
