The fourth(!) season of Superbugs and You is underway! The third episode, "Finding a Second Wind: Cystic Fibrosis," dropped this morning and features extraordinary insights from Ella Balasa, Dr Helen Boucher, and Mary Booth Dwight.
I found this quote from Ella Balasa really thought-provoking, especially in terms of how we communicate about antimicrobial resistance (AMR):
"I also think that it's so important to ground the problem in a relatable context. A lot of people think, 'Oh, yeah, AMR might affect this person that has CF and uses antibiotics all the time,' or 'Oh, this person that had tuberculosis, that's not something that I'll ever have to deal with,' but really, how common skin infections can be, or within the hospital setting too, getting an infection at a surgical site. It really can happen more often than one thinks, and so I think making AMR more relatable to the everyday average person, making sure that they understand the reality of what it can be...I think that's an area where I see one of the broadest impacts in how we can help to educate the public and help them understand."
Huge shoutout to Elise Holmes, Dr Marnie Peterson, PharmD PhD, and Diane Flayhart for the massive amount of work they do to make this podcast series a reality!
