"You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it." - Pirkei Avot In honor of #Kwanzaa, I am taking the last days of the year to reflect on what it has meant to lead Borealis Philanthropy this year. The third principle is Ujima (collective work and responsibility.) This principle is at the heart of Borealis' structure. We lead collaborative funds because we believe we must come together to improve our community. We believe it is our shared responsibility. We co-create space for the power of the collective knowing we are part of a lineage of movement builders who have come before us. And, we act knowing we are laying bricks for generations that will come after us. The work is too vast for one individual or even one organization. We exist as a vehicle for like-minded partners to join together and exercise collective impact. The power of the Borealis whole is greater than the sum of our parts. Our power is not just in each of our collaborative funds where donor partners and grantee partners contribute to and benefit from being a part of a collective. We are also powerful because our constellation of funds work together to help resource entire movement ecosystems across roles, strategies and tactics. And, most importantly, we understand that we are but one contribution in a symphony of players bending the arc toward liberation. This year, I have been grateful to represent Borealis within several formations designed to align our philanthropic contributions more effectively in service of movements. In October, I had the chance to gather with one of these tables that includes peers who came to philanthropy after careers as organizers like I did. Spaces with aligned organizations advance our work as an institution, and these spaces also sharpen my individual leadership as I am pushed and challenged by my peers in my thinking and analysis. In the philanthropy sector, we always hear or read that if we want to have bigger impacts, we should not work alone, but collaborate with others. Yet, working together is not natural and developing the conscience of ourselves as part of a living ecossystem is not as straightforward as one would think. Each institution has its own culture, interests, timing, tools and they all change over time.. often they don't match, but when they do... a fairy is born somewhere. :) Collaboration for me is about mutual understanding of our weaknesses and strengths, about listening to others needs and trying to find ways of helping even if it means going beyond your job description. Is about giving your ideas without expecting anything back and also feeling passionate about others ways of solving problems. This picture tells a lot about the spirit of collaboration that I have been trying to convey in my chairmanship of F-20, in carefully preparing the Climate Solutions Forum with many other philanthropic collectives. We are delighted about the great collaboration with the non-profit IT company AfB social & green IT. Together, we are committed to sustainability, social responsibility and inclusion. AfB social & green IT is the largest non-profit IT company in Europe with 660 employees. What particularly impresses us? Around 50% of the team are people with disabilities - a strong sign of inclusion in practice! 🔌 But it's not just about people, it's also about our environment. We don't simply dispose of our hardware, which we regularly replace in order to be able to use the latest technology. We work with AfB social & green IT, who recycle and remarket our used hardware. This conserves resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and minimises our ecological footprint. 🌿 In 2023, this partnership secured three jobs for people with disabilities. And that's not all! In this way, 407,780 kilograms of CO2 equivalents were saved, 1,584,219 kWh of energy were reduced and 137,582 kilograms of iron equivalents were recycled. 🙌 We are proud to support such partnerships and together make a positive contribution to our society and our planet. The Skate4Air case and how nurturing an online community through User Generated Content can generate a real impact on society. Since 2010, the non-profit organization Skate4AIR has been funding research for Cystic Fibrosis by organising long-distance Ice Skating competitions in Austria and Sweden, covering distances of up to 200km. We couldn’t be prouder to announce that the organization has chosen #Flowbox to help strengthen their community. By embracing a #UGC Strategy and leveraging our platform, they encourage community members to share the cause, thereby raising awareness on the issue and driving more people to join the fight against this hereditary and chronic disease, which currently lacks a cure. Using hashtags such as #Skate4AIR and #opwegnaargenezing, captivating pictures of the events are collected and showcased on their website, portraying the exciting experience and inspiring others to participate. That is not all, through UGC, the organisation can share the real stories of participants as well as volunteers and their personal reasons for joining the competition Skate4AIR, putting a face to the cause. It is undoubtedly special seeing how a community works together towards such an important cause and we welcome the partnership with excitement. We appreciate the trust placed in our solution. 🌍 From April 5th to May 10th, Munksjö employees worldwide will embark on Tour DeCore, an incredible 17,800 km journey of unity and impact!   It is the fourth consecutive year of the challenge. The aim is for each employee, in their location, to walk, run, or pedal to sum up kilometers to the team to exceed this distance together in up to 35 days, breaking last year’s record and demonstrating the power of collective effort.    As we pedal forward, we're not only promoting healthier habits but also solidarity. For every kilometer conquered, Munksjö will donate to a social cause. The programme will be revealed soon, but I am already looking forward to learning from high-level representatives of multilateral organisations and development agencies before moderating a panel with foundations that are committed to shifting and sharing power, allocating funding of the highest quality as directly as possible, and advocate for locally sustained change.
