What a surprise... Big Tech is stealing your work to fuel AI — without your permission or payment. ➡️ Wired has uncovered that tech giants like Apple, Nvidia, and Anthropic have been using YouTube videos without creators' consent to train their AI models. ➡️ An investigation revealed that subtitles from over 173,000 YouTube videos, including content from popular channels like MrBeast and educational platforms like Khan Academy, were used. ➡️ Creators, unaware of this data scraping, are outraged, calling it theft and exploitation. This practice raises significant ethical and legal questions about data use and compensation. ❓ As AI's hunger for data grows, how can we ensure fair practices and protect creators' rights? Very interesting interview with Getty Images CEO, describing their transition to be an AI creators hub. Some key excerpts: - Getty is suing Stability AI for unlawfully used Getty copyright-protected images --> Consider content copyright attributiona vs fair use - Working with Nvidia to create AI services trained only on stock images, supporting creators --> Creators compensation is important, even with AI https://lnkd.in/e42V6usP

Tech companies are using controversial methods to gather data for AI models, often without creators' consent. An investigation by Proof News revealed that companies like Anthropic, Nvidia, Apple, and Salesforce used transcripts from 173,536 YouTube videos across 48,000 channels for AI training. This includes content from educational institutions, major media outlets, and popular YouTubers like MrBeast and PewDiePie. Some material even promoted conspiracy theories. Creators, such as David Pakman, are calling for compensation for their used content. Proof News developed a tool to identify creators in the dataset. #AI #DataPrivacy #YouTube #TechEthics #ContentCreators #ProofNews #TechNews Source: Proof News Disclaimer: This meme is intended for humor and educational purposes only. One thing is for certain: AI is going to have an interesting 2024. 1. There is a lawsuit by the New York Times against Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement. 2. Further, according to Forbes, roughly 21% of the world’s overall energy usage by 2030 will be computing power alone, including AI. Not a great look, especially with growing environmental concerns. 3. A lot more testing needs to be done on AI in terms of finding hidden biases as well as ethical concerns in the case of AI art creators. It will likely be even longer for healthcare to fully adopt AI as well, due to the need for due diligence and rigorous testing. It’s important to emphasize that AI needs to be adopted responsibly and safely - especially with rising concerns about the tech. #AI #Innovation #HealthTech #Bias

"Generative AI developers at Google DeepMind have taken on the world's highest grossing entertainment industry by introducing something called "Genie." The new artificial intelligence system from Google researchers can create playable worlds resembling video games from images and text prompts. Announced in a paper Friday, Genie is not available to the public yet." Everyone can create. We are only limited by our imaginations... And we are still operating within an unregulated, "Wild West" world powered by the "Grand Theft Data" of "publicly available" content on the internet. It will be so interesting to see how the current law suits against OpenAI, StabilityAI and others play out. Will creators ever receive any form of compensation for works that have been used to train these machines? What is the price of human creativity? Do these machines serve humanity more than damage it? Do current copyright laws need a complete overhaul? #AI #FairUse #Copyright #Copywrong #FutureofImagination

In this week's meta-update: For more information go to https://lnkd.in/drfvz34J Microsoft pioneers a transformative shift in personal computing with the introduction of the Copilot Key on Windows keyboards. Marking the first significant modification since 1994, this ribbon-like feature, set to debut on Windows 11 laptops and upcoming Surface devices, unveils a dedicated button for launching Microsoft's AI chatbot, Copilot. The CES technology trade show in Las Vegas is the stage for its initial appearance on devices from ecosystem partners like Lenovo, Dell, and HP. Copilot, an AI service aiding tasks from article summarization to virtual meetings, becomes instantly accessible via this innovative key, driven by Microsoft's GPT-4 powered AI assistant. The $13 billion investment in OpenAI solidifies Microsoft's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its services. A proposal to pay news publishers a mere $1 million for utilizing their content to train large language models (LLMs) sparks negotiations and discussions with a dozen other publishers. This move seeks to preempt potential lawsuits for copyright infringement, highlighting the complex relationship between AI firms and content creators. The offer, while modest in the context of the rise of models like ChatGPT, prompts reflections on the nature of agreements between technology giants and content providers. For more information go to https://lnkd.in/dihQykDe The exposure of Midjourney's use of a database featuring up to 16,000 artists, including children, fuels the ongoing debate on AI ethics and data utilization. This revelation, stemming from a class-action lawsuit amendment, sheds light on the training practices behind AI art-generating tools. The artists, drawn from various periods and styles, contribute to the development of programs like Stable Diffusion, raising ethical concerns and accusations of "systematic theft on a mass scale" from notable figures like Drake and Kurt Cobain. As AI continues to evolve, so do the conversations around its impact on intellectual property and the creative landscape.

Google's Lumiere is both scary and exciting. If you haven't read about it here's the breakdown (from my perspective)... Google's research team announced yesterday their new breakthrough in generative AI which is consistent video content. This is important because generative AI video was available but it couldn't reliably create similar frames to make a realistic video. Here are the pros and cons I see for it. Pros: ✅ Animation and video content will be easier than ever to create, allowing more people to have access to their full creativity. ✅ Similarly to how the internet has become a basic necessity, the endless access to personalized entertainment will be more realistic. ✅ The race for AI has increased innovation for almost every field and this was the next hurdle we were leaping over. Cons: ❌ Job displacement has become an ever increasing fear and this has taken it to a new level. ❌ The line between reality and the digital world has now become more blurred. It was easy to tell if a video was created with an AI before since all they could do was basic animations, now it's going to be significantly more difficult to tell the difference. ❌ Is this even something that exists? Google has a history of stretching the truth and altering videos to seem more capable than they truly are. It is important to look at this with extreme skepticism, however it forces us to truly think about what happens next. This isn't released to the public yet and it might not truly exist yet but what happens when it does. How do we react? I would love to hear people's thoughts on this. What do you think about the future of generative video AI? #Lumiere #GenerativeAI #Google #Technology
