The Navy SEAL 24-week BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition /SEAL) is so demanding that roughly 75% of the candidates drop out before completion. Those who make it try to view these impossible days and nights, often quite literally, one step at a time. Winning the next step is doable, thinking about winning the whole day might not be. This allows them to focus on small, quick wins which provide them with pride, momentum, and the power to win the next step, and, ultimately, the day. Eventually, eating the metaphorical Elephant, one bite at at a time, seems possible. For the rest of us, setting lofty goals is great. But those big, far-reaching goals mean nothing without a series of more near-term strategic achievable goals and milestone set along that path to the achievement of the larger goal.
