Digital technologies offer tremendous potential for shifting from traditional medical routines to remote medicine and transforming our ability to manage health and independence in aging populations. In this Perspective, we summarize the current progress toward, and challenges and future opportunities of, harnessing digital technologies for effective geriatric care. Special attention is given to the role of wearables in assisting older adults to monitor their health and maintain independence at home. Challenges to the widespread future use of digital technologies in this population will be discussed, along with a vision for how such technologies will shape the future of healthy aging.

Exciting strides in women's health monitoring! 🌟 Scientists are collaborating on a revolutionary portable device, smaller than an mobile phone, empowering women to track and monitor their health and hormones on the go. This innovative gadget, funded by the Scottish Government and led by Dr. Sadeque Reza Khan from Heriot-Watt University, aims to identify symptoms associated with common female health conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The device, developed in partnership with viO HealthTech and Dr. Ruchi Gupta from the University of Birmingham, will capture comprehensive data on women's health, including period symptoms, hormone fluctuations, mood, and sleep. It will analyze fertility-related hormones like luteinizing hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone, providing a real-time and accurate picture of health. Dr. Sadeque Reza Khan envisions a device that women can carry anywhere, allowing them to test blood and urine, record symptoms, and wirelessly transfer key data to an app, which can be shared with gynecologists for informed decisions. As waiting times for gynecology appointments increase, impacting over half a million female patients, this device seeks to address delays in diagnosis and treatment. The team, working on the project for six months, aims to achieve a proof of concept before focusing on commercial availability, potentially taking two to three years. The goal is to create an affordable and sustainable device, making it accessible to a larger number of women. Heriot-Watt University's commitment to health and care technologies is evident through the establishment of a global research institute, aiming to accelerate the adoption of innovative work in the field. Professor Steve McLaughlin emphasizes the significance of this project in revolutionizing patient care through groundbreaking technologies. FemTech includes, among other things, mobile apps, wearables, internet-connected medical devices, materials science innovations, at-home diagnostics, virtual clinics, and digital communities. FemTech innovations hold the potential to support bodily autonomy for users, offer culturally sensitive solutions, and individually tailor services. FemTech often comes with private sector investment which can bring accelerated innovation, yet may also allow market incentives to dominate data collection and reporting.
