This is a living picture of 80–90% of coloured stone extraction process globally. Mostly informal and carried out mainly in remote locations by locals, foreigners, and neighbouring "guests" amongst others. It also paints a vivid depiction of the hard work and dedication that goes into extracting and sourcing these valuable resources. Despite the challenges faced by artisanal miners, the coloured stone industry remains a vital part of the global economy, bringing beauty and value to consumers around the world, including the vibrant hues of the gems now coming out of these pits! As technology advances and consumer demand grows, the coloured stone mining industry must adapt and innovate to meet the needs of a changing world while maintaining a commitment to responsible practices and sustainable development. The thing about quality consulting work is that it keeps on giving. In this case, large diamonds. When we did the FS for Grib in 2011 we sampled the kimberlite, processed 50 kt of it, got 3000 carats and valued these. In addition we sent core samples to Canada that were analysed for micro diamonds. The statistical stone count of micro diamonds corelates with the macro diamonds and the comparison of all this produced the wonderful JORC MRE. Here we are 12 years later and those estimates hold up. Other interesting things about Grib is that it is situated in a swamp and 75 x 250m deep dewatering wells keep the walls stable. The host rocks are typically between 20 and 60 Mpa UCS. For the mine to be built a river was diverted and an adjacent lake was drained.

Mining Short Notes📝 WHAT IS THE DEFINATION OF A QUARRY? A quarry is a place where rocks, sand, or minerals are extracted from the surface of Earth. A quarry is a type of mine called an open-pit mine, because it is open to Earth's surface. The most common purpose of quarries is to extract stone for building materials. Quarries have been used for thousands of years. Quarrying material for use in building materials was much more work. Stones had to be carried or dragged out of quarries manually. Stones could also be hauled with pulley systems involving ropes and moveable wooden tracks or sleds. This process often involved thousands of slaves and other workers. A sign the market is stabilizing. Petra Diamonds has seen a resurgence in rough diamond prices at its most recent tender, a sign that the market is stabilizing. The third tender of the fiscal year generated $67.9 million for 519,397 carats, averaging $131 per carat, marking a 19% increase in like-for-like prices compared to the second tender in October. Early results showed $58.7 million from 462,794 carats, with an average of $127 per carat. The final phase added 56,600 carats for $9.3 million, including sales from the Cullinan and Finsch mines ($3.1 million for 25,200 carats) and the Williamson mine in Tanzania ($6.2 million for 31,400 carats). #diamonds #diamondindustry #gemstones #diamondnews

HARRIETVILLE CHINESE MINING VILLAGE: WHAT WERE THE PURPOSES OF THE STONE SLABS? In Season 4 we focussed on continuing the excavation of one building site, Hut WC1. Scattered across WC1 are a number of stone slabs, including a few examples as large as 500mm to 600mm. Some of these were found on the surface when WC1 was initially surveyed, while others were sub-surface and uncovered in the course of excavation in Seasons 1, 2 and 4. The stones occur both within and beyond the postulated interior of the building, positioned horizontally, and occasionally in small localised groupings, that might be viewed as meaningful. External to the building, the stones could possibly indicate pathways or yard surfaces around the sides of the structure, while those stones lying within the footprint of the building may signify the remnants of floor pavers, or stone pads to support elements of a timber floor. Many of the stones also lie at a shallow depth, not much deeper than the overlying topsoil, and as such their deposition could post-date the abandonment of the building. It is probable that the significance of these flat stones and their relationship to the building, externally and internally, will only be established following extensive excavations across the whole of WC1, resulting in the discovery of other stone groupings that can be jointly assessed. Join us for Season 5 in Nov-Dec 2024, as we continue to explore the Harrietville Chinese Mining Village. 25th July 2024 Visit to black granite lease area located in Battagram (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - Pakistan) for the resource quality assessment. Black granite (dolerite) has been found in Hazara division abundantly in a few districts e.g. Mansehra, Battagram and Thakot (Allai). The extent of dolerite veins in all these areas is similar - primarily EW, however, little variations in shade and grain size is observable with the naked eye. Slates of Hazara region and Attock are often confused with dolerite as the naked eye observation of both rocks is confusingly similar. Dolerite is an igneous rock while slate is a metamorphic rock of sedimentary origin. I generally term slate as "pseudo-dolerite or pseudolerite" as it's only the look-alike of dolerite and may serve as black granite specially if it occurs in the form of boulders e.g. in Haripur the boulders are fine-grained but when polished with the same pads of dolerite (as per local industry practices), it gives a dull-polished look with apparent fine-grained texture. When the natural sheets (thin pieces separated along natural cleavage planes) of slates are cut and polished, it's difficult to differentiate between slate and dolerite. Btw I personally assessed the slates' boulders of Haripur and slates' sheets of Attock.
