Today is National Women’s Equality Day. It is on this day to commemorate the adoption of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, which prohibited states from depriving U.S. citizens the right to vote based on gender. Join us in honoring this important day and championing the ongoing effort of attaining #equality for women in all aspects of life. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gi8wgsHh #womensequalityday #OneRMB

I was honoured to open, alongside the IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson, the annual Inter-Parliamentary Union-UN Women Parliamentary Day today at #CSW68. Speaking with more than 300 parliamentarians from over 30 countries, our discussion focused on the critical role parliaments have in advancing gender equality to end poverty. I highlighted that: ⚖ In an important election year, legislators are well placed to ensure the women they represent can live in dignity. We need them to support laws that promote gender equality and uphold women’s rights; and we need them implemented, so they can yield multiple dividends. ⚖ Parliamentarians can legislate with a gender lens. They can support laws that ensure decent wages, protect domestic workers, guarantee parental leave, and freedom of choice of employment. ⚖ To end poverty, women must be safe. Legislators have a key responsibility to advance this, including by addressing the increasing scourge of technology-facilitated gender-based violence. By working together, we can create a world that is defined not by stark inequalities but by rising opportunities - a world free of poverty for all. #InvestInWomen #SDG5 #genderequality

The GE is just over a week away and we are calling on the next UK Government to create a #FeministFuture. In advocating for global gender equality, the UK must also walk the talk at home, starting with Parliament. Currently, the system remains stacked against women - only 35% of MPs are women in a country where women make up 51% of the population. We want the next UK Government to: 🟠 Commit to a gender equal parliament by enacting Section 106 of the Equality Act. This would require all parties to publish diversity data on candidates standing for elections to the House of Commons, Scottish Parliament and the Senedd. #GenderEquality #Parliament #WomenPoliticians #Women

We celebrate the re-election of Roberta Metsola as President of the European Parliament and Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission. Women leaders not only improve the quality of politics, but encourage more women to get involved - improving things even further. However, with 38.75% of the 720 newly-elected MEPs being women, there has been a small but notable decrease in representation of women - the first since 1979. This shows that while Europe has done a lot to advance fair gender representation, there is still more to do. Europe needs to renew its commitment to achieving gender parity and ensuring all voices are equally represented in all political arenas - starting with the new College of Commissioners. #RepresentationMatters Photo credits: European Parliament

In several EU Member States, a century has now passed since women won the right to vote. Although there are still obstacles to participation, some effective strategies were designed to increase women's participation and representation. In this presentation, Dr. Ionel Zamfir from European Parliamentary Research Service explains how the EU has committed to achieving a gender balance in political representation. #SOTEUCitizensRights

Tomorrow’s General Election is a critical moment for gender equality in UK politics. This year, women make up 40% of candidates in winnable seats, an exciting step towards a more representative Parliament. 🗳️ Despite this progress, we are not yet at gender parity. As we head to the polls, it’s crucial to recognise that the journey towards equal representation is ongoing. Political parties must take action to address biases in candidate selection and ensure diverse voices are included at every level. We call for: -Quotas and unbiased selection processes to support women, especially those from marginalised backgrounds. -Parliamentary reforms to remove barriers to women's participation, including better parental leave policies for MPs. -Commitments to 50% female representation in post-election frontbench and ministerial teams. A more gender-equal Parliament means a democracy that truly represents and serves everyone. Let's seize this opportunity for change. Equal representation is very important for everyone to be heard equally! Equal representation is very important so that when resolutions are perceived, discussed and passed they take into consideration everyone’s view, beliefs and arrive at solution that benefits everyone it effects. Let’s make sure we have higher percentage share!!
🏛️ As of last year, only 26.5% of members of parliament are women globally. Representation matters. It's time to work towards gender parity! Read more: https://lnkd.in/dWU2GnE5 #WomenInPolitics

A very low percentage of women MPs globally ⬇, although most countries have some sort of legal requirements for representation in parliaments!!!!. But, what about women's representation in leadership positions in governments, where often affirmative legal measures are lacking for women's representation ❓ The answer is a much much lower representation of women ❕ ❕ Representation matters, indeed! And we have a long way ahead to push for equality ✅
