🚨 "Two males in a silver van. They're smashing the door with a crowbar." 🚨
When the video alarm came in, it took only seconds for Felisha, Operations Shift Supervisor, to dispatch the police. "I knew something terrible would happen," she said.

Thank you to CHeKT Visual Security for supporting this apprehension and Alarm Illinois for your ongoing partnership and trust. 🤝
While working an early morning shift, I received a video burglary alarm. I saw a minivan back up to the storefront. I watched the video for about four seconds and I noticed that two people walked up to the front door and one of them had a crowbar. *Phone Ringing* "Cook County." "Hello, this is Felicia with Alarm Illinois." "I'm calling to dispatch for a crime in progress." "OK. What do you see?" "Two males. They pulled up their silver minivan up to the door." I told the dispatcher calmly exactly what I was seeing on video as it was happening live. Initially, I had a huge adrenaline rush. I knew that something terrible was about to happen. I knew I needed to act quickly in order to get it stopped. "They had a crowbar. They smashed the door out with the crowbar." "Do you have any further descriptions?" "They're both males, heavier set." "Both are wearing black hoodies with the hoods up." "One has gray sweatpants, the other has blue jeans." It seemed like they had this planned. they had a makeshift wooden dolly and a tow strap with them. They made entry into the premises. They were in there for about 3 seconds and then they came out with an ATM machine. "A minivan. It's an Odyssey, I can tell you that." "Silver Odyssey." "They're taking out the ATM as we speak." "They have a towing rope that you use to wrap around a tow truck." "They're trying to pull it out with a car right now." "The ATM." They took off and ended up leaving it right there in the parking lot. Because it was a video burglary alarm, I was able to let the dispatcher know that the suspects did leave the scene. They had to make a move to get out of there quickly, or they might have been caught. "They're putting- trying to get the ATM in the back of their car." "Oh, and the guy fell out. Oh, and they left it." "They left without the ATM?" "Yep, they sure did. They just left it laying right in front of the door" "Alright, we have officers in route out there to check it out." "Perfect. I appreciate it, Sir. You have a good night." After mapping their location, I was able to tell the dispatcher where and what direction they were heading and the police were there within 10 minutes. In the end, the best part of this is that this was able to lead to an apprehension. It turns out they were involved with a handful of these crimes across multiple jurisdictions. When I found out they were apprehended, I was ecstatic. I was like, "Yes! justice has been served." It's such a great feeling knowing I made the right move and I was able to help protect someone's property. There's no better feeling than that.
Hi, connections! 👋
I'm excited to share that I've just published an article on a topic that's incredibly important in today's digital landscape: "Stay Alert, It's a Scam! 🚨 Unveiling the Police Station Scam."

New York Police Department (NYPD) officers spent thousands of hours between 2020 and 2023 responding to unconfirmed gunshot detection alerts from ShotSpotter, according to an audit released Thursday.
“ShotSpotter claims to be a ‘proven detection system’ that is ‘faster and more accurate,’ but our audit found that 87 percent of the time, ShotSpotter is sending NYPD officers in response to loud noises that don’t turn out to be confirmed shootings,” said New York City Comptroller Brad Lander in a statement. “The evidence shows that NYPD is wasting precious time and money on this technology and needs to do a better job managing its resources. Chasing down car backfires and construction noise does not make us safer.”
📣 A spokesperson for SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter) shared a statement with me for Security Management (ASIS International) that the company is continuing to review the audit. But at a high level, the spokesperson said the company believes the audit is “gravely misinformed in its assessment of data and the value of ShotSpotter as a critical public safety tool.”

Watch this video that shows what took place during the attempted murder of a security supervisor working at an Amazon facility.
There are key takeaways from this attempted murder incident, but first, we are glad that the suspect did not physically harm the supervisor in this incident due to the malfunction; the suspect lost his life due to his actions alone.
This incident could have been a tragedy if the suspect was looking to commit mass executions, and we are glad that was not the case.
To our knowledge, the supervisor is an unarmed guard, and there appeared to be no armed guards within the vicinity of where the crime took place. This incident brings up an important question: are gun-free zones safe?
We would argue that having unarmed guards that cannot protect life is like having no flotation devices in the middle of the ocean. During a shooting, you will wish you had armed guards to protect life.
Police response is slow when seconds and minutes count the most. The average response time for an active shooter incident is 4-5 minutes; let us think to ourselves how many people can lose their lives in that time frame.
Having well-trained armed security officers dramatically decreases the chance that someone will try such an act due to being aware of the security presence, and those looking to harm, in most cases a criminal will choose to attack gun-free zones or easy targets where they will not be challenged.
The second point we want to make is situational awareness; the supervisor does not appear to acknowledge the suspect even after he racked his slide due to a malfunction. The sound of the hammer dropping did not cause him to turn around; did the supervisor have earbuds in, causing him not to hear? This just shows how important it is to not be hyper-focused on one task, continuously observe your surroundings, and not have both earbuds in if you are going to have them.
We understand sometimes it gets boring standing post, but being unaware can cause you to lose your life. It is that serious.
We hope the supervisor gets all the help he needs to get past this traumatic incident and that Amazon Web Services (AWS)Amazon rethinks its policies on armed security officers. This could have been a mass shooting incident where multiple people lost their lives.

🚨CRIME PREVENTED 👀👊
Our Operator spotted multiple people on a #SelfStorage site out of hours, one of them at the door of a unit.
Escalated to #GuardResponse and #Police immediately.
Guard on site within 5 minutes.
Police just 2 minutes later.
#CrimePrevented 👌
*Look at the cctv image, partially blocked by cobwebs, in black and white, not a great image. Using our #VideoAnalytics we were able to highlight the individuals to our Operators who then made every right human decision to prevent potential crime 👨💻🙌
Efforts like this make it all worthwhile. We work so closely with our customers, installers and The Self Storage Association UK to help educate and drive standards for #Security and #Monitoring#Technology + #People 🤜🤛

Relying solely on camera systems for security can be risky. Cameras are reactionary—they only capture what has already happened and can be unreliable in critical moments.
At GCI Security, we believe in proactive protection. Our trained security officers on-site ensure immediate response, deterrence, and peace of mind. Don’t leave your safety to chance—trust GCI Security for the vigilant, human touch that technology alone can't provide.
