While we constantly read headlines about mangrove losses, it's crucial to celebrate when an initiative bucks this trend. 🇧🇷 For example, this year Brazil has taken a significant step forward in mangrove conservation by establishing 2 new extractive reserves in Pará state = 275,000 hectares of Amazon mangroves protected This move not only safeguards vital ecosystems but also supports sustainable livelihoods for thousands of residents. Rainforests in Southeast Asia and Oceania are under pressure with large, contiguous forests only being apparent on the islands of Borneo and New Guinea - a drastic difference from 39 years ago where lush rainforests filled the region. Satellite imagery further illustrates the rapid rate of deforestation in Kalimantan, indicating that 56% of protected lowland rainforests were cut down between 1985 and 2001 amounting to 29,000 square kilometres of the rainforest being lost. The Rainforest Foundation Norway elaborates on this issue, sharing that not only has this resulted in the displacement of some of the world’s most species-rich ecosystems in the world, but has also jeopardized the standard of living of communities whose livelihoods are dependent on the rainforests. If this continues, more of this demographic will lose their homes, as seen in Borneo, where 2.5 million indigenous people have been displaced. “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing” is the theme for World Wetlands Day 2024. Green World Campaign Kenya, acknowledges that wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and providing various ecosystem services hence we engage our local communities in wetland conservation efforts, implementing educational programs in schools and communities to foster a better understanding of wetland ecosystems and their importance, while collaborating with other organizations, government agencies, and local communities to pool resources and expertise for more effective wetland conservation. We continue to initiate with communities anchored in place-sourced solutions that support wetland restoration projects which also goes in tandem with rehabilitation of degraded wetland areas. 2024 theme brings out the interconnectedness between wetland ecosystems and the overall well-being of human beings. It also highlights the critical role that wetlands play in supporting various aspects of human life, from providing essential resources to contributing to our overall quality of life. 🦀 Did you know? Mexico's mangroves provide environmental services valued between $1.44 trillion and $24.3 trillion annually. However, unchecked tourism expansion, urbanization, and changes in land use, particularly for agriculture and cattle grazing, have led to the destruction of extensive areas of Mexican mangroves. Through the RE3CO initiative, World Resources Institute is leading community-driven efforts for the restoration, conservation, and management of mangrove forests in the country. The initiative sheds light on the stories of community leaders involved in this endeavor through the five-part series "Guardians of Mexico’s Mangroves," highlighting the social, economic, and environmental benefits of this ecosystem. Zanzibar Mangroves restoration Phase II #SOAZanzibar aims to build upon their mangrove restoration efforts while also driving sustainable livelihoods in the local community through the introduction of a beekeeping initiative. This was achieved through planting 1,000 mangrove seedlings in areas heavily impacted by mangrove cutting, while also offered comprehensive training to 60 individuals on effective mangrove planting techniques. They also organized a community workshop to educate locals about beekeeping practices, equipped them with the necessary tools and beehives to initiate the project. The overarching goal is to provide the community with an alternative income source, thus reducing their dependence on mangrove cutting for firewood as their source of income. 🌍Wetland protection is at the heart of our environmental concern. On this Wetland Day, we reaffirm our commitment to wetland conservation and sustainable practices promotion within our mining operations. Torotorofotsy, located to the east of Ambatovy's Mine, near Moramanga, is an integral component of our conservation area, covering 10,064 hectares of wetlands, forests and diverse habitats. We support local community associations by enhancing their management skills and collaborating on initiatives to prevent the transformation and degradation of these wetlands. Last week, I participated in a workshop in Tanzania organized by WWF Tanzania to review a report analyzed the national policy and legal frameworks related to mangroves conservation and to provide recommendations for promoting community-user rights management systems in Tanzania. During this workshop, the Tanzanian government shared impressive progress, announcing the operationalization of their new guideline for the management and utilization of mangrove resources. This new guideline grants communities additional rights to sustainably utilize mangrove resources from their localities. It allows communities to conserve and harvest mangroves sustainably based on established sustainable harvesting principles. Under this new guideline developed in 2021, communities are permitted to retain 5% of total revenues from the sale of mangroves. Currently, the guideline is being piloted in two districts, Kibiti and Kilwa, where there are sufficient mangrove stocks for sustainable harvesting. Initially, mangroves in Tanzania were completely protected, and no sustainable utilization was allowed. However, despite that restrictive policy, the country continued to witness a significant loss of mangroves each year, with some areas, such as the Rufiji delta, recording losses of up to 350 hectares per year. This new guideline will help communities consider mangroves as their resource that needs to be conserved and benefit everyone equally, unlike in the past where only illegal loggers benefited directly.

INSIGHTFUL- Using Beehives to Protect Mangroves in Kenya In Mombasa, Kenya, a remarkable community initiative is leveraging the natural deterrent power of bees to combat illegal logging and protect vital mangrove ecosystems. Peter Nyongesa, a local conservationist, has hidden beehives within the mangroves to discourage loggers from cutting down these crucial trees. Mangroves are essential in preventing coastal erosion and mitigating the impacts of severe weather events. Unfortunately, over 40% of Kenya's mangroves are degraded due to illegal logging, climate change, and urban development. The beekeeping initiative not only helps preserve these ecosystems but also provides an additional income stream for the community through the sale of high-quality, medicinal mangrove honey. This innovative approach is part of the broader Tulinde Mikoko initiative ("Let's Protect Mangroves"), showcasing how community-driven efforts can make a significant difference in environmental conservation. 📢 Conflict-free water in Kunene. We are excited to present the progress we have made in the Kunene Highlands of Namibia over Quarter 2 of 2024! Our priority for Kunene was to improve water access for both people and wildlife to reduce conflict over scarce or dysfunctional water points. Water Point Committees & Training: We've successfully established six water point committees and trained caretakers for each water point to ensure that the waterpoints remain functional and sustainable. Baseline Surveys: We have prepared to conduct household surveys to provide socioeconomic data for appropriate planning of potential rangeland restoration and carbon projects Tourism Development: We facilitated discussions between a tourism investor, Forgotten Valley Ltd., and the Orupupa Conservancy Committee to discuss a joint venture contract to build a 12-bed camp at Ekoto.
