🔍Our Industry Trends and Attitudes Report highlights widespread public backing for Scotland's fishing sector. The report's survey of 1,000 adults found nearly two-thirds (62%) expressing a positive opinion towards this vital industry deeply rooted in the nation's heritage and communities. Notably, 12% held a very favourable view. We know that illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is an issue that affects the health and well-being of our oceans and the livelihoods of Canadians. We were at the Our Ocean Conference recently with international partners to share information and work together to combat this global issue. As the new chair of the IUU Fishing Action Alliance (IUU-AA) this year, Canada will drive global efforts and work with international partners to address IUU fishing with increased transparency and the use of technology. On 16 April, Greece became the first EU country to ban bottom fishing at the ‘Our Ocean’ world conference, initially in national marine parks ‘by 2026’ and then ‘in all marine protected areas by 2030’. Sweden is set to become the second EU country to ban bottom fishing in marine protected areas, going a step further than Greece’s April decision by banning it in all territorial waters. https://lnkd.in/dUTBzNTv

🥂 We’ve achieved a huge victory in terms of campaigning today. DEFRA has today announced the end to industrial sandeel fishing in the English waters of the North Sea and the Scottish Government has announced an end to industrial sandeel fishing in all Scottish waters. To put how momentous this is into context – it’s something the RSPB has been campaigning on for more than 25 years. Tenacity, commitment, innovation, all backed up by concrete evidence and data - so many people and such an amazing outcome at last. This decision is going to protect a vital food source of our seabirds, throwing them a crucial lifeline, when they are facing so many threats that show no sign of letting up.  And it wouldn’t have happened without so much work across our campaigns, communications, digital, policy and advocacy, and science teams and so much more. Our members and supporters who raised their voices in response to the UK Government and Scottish Government consultations last year played a huge and vital role – more than 44,000 people supported the two campaigns. The result of the UK Government Consultation was published in July, showing overwhelming support (over 95.5%!) for the discontinuation of industrial sandeel fishing. A real win for our seabirds.  A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to this over the years, and we’ll keep campaigning for the things that matter. There is hope - we've just got to believe and stick with it.
