#Forests in the Mediterranean region face significant degradation and increasing vulnerability to climate change, population pressures, wildfires, and water scarcity. However, modeling their dynamics at a regional scale is challenging due to their high heterogeneity (e.g., age, species) in this region. In this work led by Daniela Dalmonech, we apply a stand-scale process-based model (3D-CMCC-FEM, available at https://lnkd.in/d9tdRb8n) in a spatially explicit manner at a 1 km spatial resolution in a Mediterranean region in southern Italy. Specifically, we developed a methodology to initialize 3D-CMCC-FEM, which involves the use of spatial information derived from the integration of #remotesensing (RS) data, national forest inventory data, and regional forest maps to characterize structural features of the main forest species. We demonstrate that the model can reproduce most of the spatial (approximately 2800 km2) and temporal (32 years in total) patterns of the observed GPP at both seasonal, annual, and interannual time scales, even at the species level. A new paper on mapping daily air temperature in the Hawaiian Islands was just published in the journal Earth and Space Science, led by East-West Center researchers Keri Kodama PhD and co-authored Ryan Longman PhD. Steep changes in island terrain and shifts in atmospheric conditions between sea level and high elevation create distinct challenges for producing continuously and automatically updated temperature maps in near-real-time in Hawaiʻi. The paper discusses how these challenges are addressed with a variety of methods for processing the data and adjusting the model that produces the temperature maps. High-quality, up-to-date temperature maps are important for applications such as the prediction of wildfire risk, the assessment of ecological hazards such as avian malaria, and resource management planning for agriculture. "Using a #FireSpreadModel, we investigate how several different plausible projections of mid-21st century climate could alter fire regimes for the moist temperate forests of the #PacificNorthwest and bracket the range of possible fire regime shifts that could be expected in the region. The largest increases to burn probability and fire size are likely to occur in the cooler, wetter northern forests (the #OlympicPeninsula and #WashingtonNorthCascades) and the Oregon West Cascades, with more moderate changes for the Oregon Coast Range and Washington West Cascades."
