For those looking at a career in construction, deploying internet infrastructure probably isn’t the first thing to come to mind. But the job openings in this area are booming. During an industry event held this summer in Denver, Colorado, Primoris Services Corporation — one employer currently hiring workers in the industry — touched base with us on what they look for in a candidate. The advice boiled down to two simple tips: learn a bit about what's going on in the industry — and be willing to learn. One of the biggest problems in delivering infrastructure projects is projects running behind schedule and costs skyrocketing. Unfortunately, it's the community that bears the brunt when projects get trimmed or fail to deliver the promised benefits. The real issue? It erodes trust in the industry's ability to get things done. The fix might sound simple – slow down, plan more thoroughly, and have a rock-solid plan before diving in. But here's the catch – it's political. Projects are often tangled up in politics. Yet, slowing down and ironing out the details in the planning phase can speed up the overall project. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. That's where TMY Advisory comes in. In the planning stage, I focus on bringing up any unresolved issues, urging more investigations and design to tackle potential problems head-on. It's about saying, "Let's not rush into things. We need to resolve these unresolved issues before we start." This includes pushing back against those who want a groundbreaking photo op without a solid plan. We go the extra mile by scenario testing and sensitivity testing the project plan. What if this happens? What if that pops up? For instance, what if we assume a utility is in one spot, but it turns out it's somewhere else, causing a clash? We need to know the cost and impact. Ultimately, we aim to remove the rose-coloured glasses from the planning phase. People tend to be overly optimistic, clouding their judgement, and we want to change that.

Specialized consultant in Civil & Infrastructure Construction. I connect top talent with leading firms to drive impactful projects and ensure operational success.
Is finding qualified talent in civil construction like searching for a needle in a haystack? I was recently having a conversation with a colleague in the civil construction industry, and the same theme came up yet again – finding the right talent is a significant challenge. Post-pandemic, the industry has seen a shift. Companies are juggling fluctuating workloads, and while projects continue to roll in, there’s a serious gap when it comes to filling key roles with qualified professionals. We’re not just talking about any hire – we’re looking for people who can lead, execute, and manage large-scale projects in an ever-demanding landscape. The issue isn’t just about skill. It’s about finding someone who has the right mix of technical expertise and leadership. It’s about experience, the ability to manage teams, budgets, and deadlines under pressure. And let’s not forget industry-specific requirements like licensing and local experience – especially for senior roles like project managers, civil engineers, or land surveyors. The question I keep hearing from employers is: “Where do we find these people?” The good news is that, while challenging, it’s not impossible. A well-thought-out approach to recruitment that focuses on tapping into niche markets and leveraging relationships can go a long way. We have to be more proactive, creative, and strategic in how we engage with potential candidates. This is where staffing partners play a pivotal role—helping bridge the gap and find the right fit. If you’re also navigating this hiring dilemma, I’d love to hear your thoughts. How are you managing your recruitment efforts in this tight market? #ConstructionIndustry #TalentShortage #CivilEngineering #RecruitmentChallenges #LeadershipInConstruction #StaffingSolutions

What are your current #recruitment challenges particularly in the #rail, #infrastructure & #geo sectors? Jo Hall has been speaking with our clients and key things that seem to be coming out are: 1️⃣ Projects/works moving slowly. New work is out there which is positive but not yet there so making decisions around recruitment is tricky and a different 'plan' maybe necessary 2️⃣ When recruiting , can get vast amounts of interest; however still lacking those profiles/candidates you really want/need. 3️⃣ High number of candidates being lost during the process/ not getting the candidates you want to commit at the end of the process. Would you agree with this? What are your experiences with recruitment currently? #SELECTTALENT
