You make a game that fails financially? You might get laid off. You make a game that does well financially? You might get laid off. You make a game that is universally loved, highly rated, and wins awards? Believe it or not, you might get laid off. What the hell are we doing as an industry?

However, with large numbers of layoffs at AAA studios, there's an opportunity for indie game studios (such as Koffeecup) to benefit by gaining more traction and visibility in the industry.

Hey there. Not unexpected news about Gamer Network being acquired by IGN Entertainment (apart from the IGN being the purchaser), as Gamer Network and GamesIndustry.Biz has been for sale by ReedPop for a while, also, I'm not necessarily unsurprised that a few bloody brilliant and talented people I count as ex-colleagues and friends were affected by the fallout from the sale and are now looking for their new home. :( Have a read of the story James Batchelor posted on his daily news roundup here, which also includes what's going on today in the industry. Activision Blizzard I have to say, you patch #Warcraft3 on MAC and its unplayable (will not load) for all MAC's since October 4th with no ETA on when it will be fixed (16 Days!!). Speechless, no comms, nothing....... https://lnkd.in/gvnXqJjc I am not one to typically complain and these days I hardly play, but when my old school friend of 20 years is down from interstate, with my 14 year old son wanting to beat us both (he probably will), and we decide to play WarCraft 3, I expect it to work. Yes I know everyone has a PC, and MAC's are outliers, but how can you offer a paid offering for years, patch it, break it and offer no rollback or ETA. This is a text book example of why observability, chaos engineering and SRE are important.

FromSoftware announces a 11.8% raise for everyone. You love to see it. Some voices in the gaming industry have attributed the poor sales of AAA Western games this year to high consumer expectations or broader economic challenges. It’s worth considering whether other factors, such as the trend of releasing unfinished or repetitive titles, or those that fail to resonate with core audiences, might be contributing to these struggles. Studios like FromSoftware, Game Science, Helldivers, and Palworld are succeeding despite having smaller budgets and facing the same economic conditions as everyone else. Their success stories stand out, especially in 2024. Perhaps the key takeaway is that prioritizing gamers and focusing on quality gameplay can still drive success, even in challenging times.
