In a typical #Steam System, water hammering can be observed in 2 locations: - Water hammering in Steam Header - Water hammering in Condensate Header We know that water hammering can occur whenever there is a dual phase flow of Steam & condensate, so to maintain a healthy piping network in a typical steam system we should focus on minimizing water hammering. This can be done by understanding the root causes for each case of water hammering. - Water hammering in Steam Header: (1) Lack of drain traps in Header. It is recommended to install a Steam Trap for condensate draining every 30m in a Steam header. (2) Failure of Traps in Fail-to-close (Plugged) condition. These traps can not discharge neither steam or condensate which results in water logging leading to hammering in steam header. - Water hammering in Condensate Header: (1) Failure of Traps in Fail-to-open condition. Traps which are Passing (Leaking) steam in the condensate header cause dual phase flow leading to hammering in condensate header. So, how do we resolve this?
