Are labels really all that important? Back in my youthful, ambitious days, I used to chase job titles as eagerly as a dog chases its tail. But as fate would have it, owning my own businesses taught me a valuable lesson: titles are about as significant as a paper umbrella in a hurricane. Last night, at our Church Board meeting, I decided to put my curiosity to the test and asked the Chairman and our Reverend what my official title was. Their response? A delightful smirk from both, followed by the Chairman's nonchalant reply: "Call yourself whatever want, titles are not important here and our Reverend in his dry witty way said, "Call yourself Grand Poobah if you want." And just like that, the truth hit me like a ton of holy bricks: titles are as flimsy as tissue paper in a rainstorm. In the realm of small business ownership, I wear many hats. Some days I'm any one or all of these roles from President, CEO, CFO, CIO, Board Member, and hey, why not throw in Head of Custodian Services while we're at it? Because let's face it, when you're doing all the heavy lifting, why limit yourself to just one fancy label? At the end of the day, what truly matters is the quality of service you provide and the relationships you cultivate. Forget the fancy titles and focus on fostering trust, respect, and long-lasting connections. That, my friends, is the real recipe for success in the business world. Stop counting wins you didn't earn I used to only focus on outcomes: - $20,000/mo - 10 new clients - 5,000 followers Sometimes I succeeded. Often, I didn't. But those goals weren't really in my control. My success, externally validated. During an international trip on a motorcycle, I decided to live by the saying: “It’s about the journey, not the destination” A flat tire won't make a mountain any less beautiful. A closed border is a new opportunity to win. Now I ONLY count a win if I give it my all. The outcome doesn’t matter. The work is the reward. Succeed by doing. Now of course, when good things happen: - Understand Why. - Be Grateful. - Do It More But train your mind to reward hard work. The joy of a job well done, Is a job well done. In those moments, reframing to positivity is everything. Standing up and bravely counting your wins in gratitude makes you a prizefighter. Every roadblock, pothole, and detour teaches you something. When you dust off and stand back up, you're already better. ⭐ People must earn the right to give an opinion. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again... who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.” - Teddy Roosevelt ⭐ It takes grit, grace, and stamina. It's a longer play, when you're trying to change the way people are treated, in an industry that is the third largest employer in the US. Even more so when you've changed the way deals are done in a trillion-dollar industry. Especially when the rules of the game are decades old and were written by people who don't look like you. 𝘼 𝙬𝙞𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙨! On Monday night, I was honoured with the title of the Local Business Awards Gold Coast Most Outstanding Business Person of the Year 2024. The Local Business Awards is an awards program that has been running for 40 years throughout Sydney and Melbourne. This is the first year the awards have expanded throughout the country, so I am truly thrilled to have been selected as the inaugural winner of the Gold Coast's Most Outstanding Business Person of the Year for 2024. What a proud moment to receive such an honour in a room full of hundreds of respected business owners across a myriad of different professions and trades. Many of the businesses represented last night have rich histories, operating for 50+ years with hundreds of staff, turning over millions of dollars each year, some each week. I haven't found success in business in a traditional sense, I have hustled hard from as young as I can remember - I've had three incarnations in business (so far!), as well as always being involved in property and property development. I have always been a proud entrepreneur. I have never kept this a secret. I have always had my fingers in many pies and a strong instinct as to when to get in and when to get out - and an even stronger fighting spirit. Hey, wait a minute......That's MY last name!!?! Yes, practice what you preach! Either that, or my wife did not read the fine print in our marriage contract. ;-) Needless to say, I am so incredibly proud of my wife, Hao Isley and her new venture into entrepreneurship and franchise ownership. From the day I met her, I knew she would be an entrepreneur. From her parents being immigrant entrepreneurs to her natural leadership abilities, I could see it a mile away. However, she has the one thing that I believe trumps all other qualities when starting a business.......WORK ETHIC. Starting a business is tough. There are million things to do and so many hats to wear and all you can really do is knock one item of the list at a time. So after watching her work countless nights, putting hours in on our honeymoon and never "turning off", it was time to put all that hard work into something that could be her own. From Rivals to Respect: Lessons from Stallone and Schwarzenegger I recently watched a TMZ interview with action movie legends Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was inspiring to see how these two icons, who started as fierce rivals, have grown to deeply respect each other and their accomplishments. Key takeaways from their stories: 1️⃣ Early Motivation to Succeed: Both Stallone and Schwarzenegger were driven by challenging childhoods to achieve something greater. This resonates with many of the driven individuals I work with in franchise businesses. They want a better future for themselves and their families, free from the limitations of a traditional job. 2️⃣ No Plan B: Arnold’s words stuck with me—paraphrasing, he said, “We have enough doubters in our lives, but the worst doubt is self-doubt. A back-up plan creates self-doubt. Failure is not an option so I never have a Plan B!” This mindset aligns with my own approach: Failure is not an option, ever! You will have ups and downs in everything you do that is not easy and most will never start, but you don’t quit.
