What you should learn from HelloFresh and bring into your office? Such a great experience last week! I had the honor of being invited to the HelloFresh office in Berlin. Wooooow - what a huuuuge ofiiiceeee. Huge thanks to Shaharia Azam for the tour! Among the enviously awesome rooftop with a view of the Fernsehturm and the extremely inclusive atmosphere, here are the top three details I observed: ➡ SPACE EMBODIES COMPANY ITSELF. Naming their meeting rooms after famous dishes gives the space a strong character, making it remarkable and attention-grabbing. Visitors truly feel the HelloFresh spirit and employees are surrounded by company identity. ➡ THEY HELP USERS TO GET THE BEST. I really loved the QR code system where you can report issues to the workplace team. It provides a clear procedure for when something gets broken. Users are responsible for reporting the issue, and the workplace team is informed and needs to act. Yes, I love processes, but well, you need them to get things done. Otherwise, the TV will stay broken for ages... ➡ THEY MAKE THE WORKPLACE CONVENIENT. Many companies want people to come back to the office but don't really try to make it convenient for employees. I bet having a nanny in the office makes life easier for a lot of parents... Reality check for you: Evaluate how your office is before forcing people to come back. When I took on a new role as a COO back in 2017, if I had a magic wand, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: - I understand the culture of the company I just joined and fit right in - I have the keys to engage my teams: they are highly motivated and we deliver great results! - I am focused: I have a clear vision where I'm heading. 80% of my time is dedicated to making this vision come true. - I feel in control, confident & successful - I am in partner mode with my boss - I have a good worklife balance: I have time for my family, I sleep well, I'm full of energy 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆. - It took me a while to get the unwritten rules. - Building trust with the teams took more time than expected. At first, they didn't see my added value. - I knew what I wanted my team to become but I wasn't sure how to get there; if it was even possible. - I had too many hats, too many projects... I was under water - I could not relate with my boss, with his way of approaching things. Trust took time to build. - All this made the situation stressful. To add more stress to it, my family & I were back in Paris after 2,5 yrs spent in Dubai. Our appartement was rented so we had to rent a small appartment elsewhere where 4 people could barely fit in. One of the many reasons I love working at Lightspeed Commerce is the incredible flexibility we have when it comes to balancing work and personal life. Here's a glimpse of my Monday working from home: 🕤 9:30 AM: A bit of a later start this morning. 💻 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Catching up on work and emails. ☕ 12:00 PM - 12:15 PM: Quick coffee break at my favorite local café. 💼 12:15 PM - 2:00 PM: Back home for more focused work time. 🏋️ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Hit the gym while it's quiet and empty. 👨⚕️ 3:00 PM - 3:30 PM: Short visit to the doctor's office. 📑 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM: Finishing off work and preparing for tomorrow. Having the ability to manage my own schedule has not only helped my productivity but also ensures I can take care of my personal well-being. Vacations in a startup can be a chaos... until they surprisingly become a catalyst for breaking down communication barriers. Summer holidays often mean team members are out, leaving gaps. But in our startup, this has been a blessing in disguise. When someone takes time off, others step up. They collaborate with colleagues they don’t usually work with. This necessity breaks down silos and fosters a more cohesive team environment. Communication improves as people reach out more. I recently took two weeks off as CTO. The team self-organized and continued shipping projects seamlessly. This period showed our team’s resilience and adaptability. They maintained productivity and communicated effectively. Allowing team members to take ownership in others' absence builds trust and independence. It strengthens the overall team dynamic. In the end, vacations have unexpectedly enhanced our startup’s communication and collaboration.
