🐾 Service Dog Myths vs. Facts 🐾 🐕🦺 Happy National Service Dog Awareness Month! 🐶 Myth 1: Any dog can be a service dog. ✅ Truth: Not every dog has the ability or temperament for service work. Service dogs must complete extensive, specialized training that includes advanced obedience and public access skills as well as training to perform tasks that mitigates their handler's disability. 🐕🦺 Myth 2: You can tell a service dog by their vest. ✅ Truth: Wearing a vest does not make a dog a service dog. Their extensive training and ability to perform tasks for their handler's disability is what makes them a service dog in the US, according to the ADA law. Service dogs in the US are not required to wear a vest or any type of special gear. 🐩 Myth 3: You can tell a service dog by their breed or size. ✅ Truth: While some large dog breeds are more common for service work (such as Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers, standard poodles, or German Shepherds), service dogs can be from any breed (or mixed breed!) or size. While larger sized dogs are required for some disability-mitigating tasks (such as guide work and mobility work), other service dog tasks can be performed by small breeds (such as blood sugar alert, allergen detection, or item retrieval). 🐾 The next time you see a service dog in public, remember not to pet or distract them. They’re hard at work! 💼 #ServiceDogs #DisabilityRights #Accessibility #ServiceAnimalAwareness #Inclusion

🐶💡 Welcome back to 'Did You Know'! Puppies undergo a critical period of socialization from around 3 to 14 weeks of age. This timeframe is key in shaping a puppy's future behavior and temperament. 🐾🌍 During this stage, puppies should be introduced to a wide range of experiences - different types of people, animals, environments, sounds, and textures. The goal is to ensure that they grow comfortable with the world around them. 🏞️🏙️ Positive experiences during this time can help puppies grow into confident and well-adjusted adult dogs. This process helps them learn that new experiences and changes in their environment are normal parts of life and not something to fear. 🐕🦺💪 However, it's equally important to ensure that these experiences are positive and not overwhelming. Negative experiences during this period can also have a lasting impact. It's all about balance and considering the individual puppy's comfort and pace. 🐶⚖️ Remember, raising a puppy requires time, patience, and understanding. But the rewards of having a confident, well-socialized adult dog make it worth the effort. Stay tuned with #DidYouKnow and #PetReflex for more pet-related facts and tips! #PuppySocialization #DogBehavior #PuppyDevelopment #DogFacts #PetTraining

When we date, we search for a compatible mate. Their looks may be the first thing that attracts us, but in the end, personality, morals and compatibility is important if we want a long-lasting relationship. This rule should also apply to searching for a new puppy (or dog) for your family. Those puppy dog eyes will only get you so far in your relationship. If you are unable to meet the dog's breed-specific needs, your relationship will crash and burn. Unlike human relationships, your partner cannot move back home with their family or get their own place. Dogs end in shelters. Often, the shelter is the end for the dog. Before you sign on the dotted line to bring your new canine friend home, do research. Does the dog match your energy level? Will the full-grown version of this dog fit in your house? Will the full-grown dog be too big or small for a home with young children? Can you keep up with the grooming needs? I am not only talking about the fur. My dog must have her nails cut on a monthly basis. My other dog needed her anal glands expressed every two months. There are so many things to consider. In my latest video I provided tips to Emily, who asked which breed would fit into her family. Choosing a dog is so much more than picking the right breed. This Summer, Dog Savvy Kids will release the Ultimate Guide for Welcoming a New Puppy into your home.
