The Grimace Effect: How do you know when NOT to market something? I had the opportunity to join Mets CMO Andrew (Andy) Goldberg at Citi Field for a talk about #Marketing the New York Mets. One of the most interesting things he said about the Grimace phenomenon was: "When we saw it take off, we knew that it needed to stay fan driven. If we tried to push it too hard ourselves as it was happening, it would lose its organic impact." A great lesson on riding the wave of your customers' enthusiasm and how sometimes putting customers in the drivers seat is the best marketing strategy.

Communicating your brand's value, benefits, and reason to believe can be a daunting task, especially in highly regulated industries. However, Buckley's has managed to do it brilliantly with their iconic ad campaign. The ad beautifully captures the emotions and delivers a powerful message: "Buckley's cough syrup tastes awful and it works." The ad's success lies in its authenticity and relatability. It doesn't try to sugarcoat the unpleasant taste of the syrup but instead embraces it as a necessary evil. As marketers, we can learn a lot from Buckley's approach. By focusing on authenticity, relatability, and humor, we can create campaigns that cut through the noise and connect with our target audience. So, the next time you're struggling to communicate your brand's value, take a page from Buckley's playbook and embrace what makes your product unique. There is nothing I love more that subtle marketing. In letting the story and the cinema capture the moment. And I think Burberry have just about done it. It's always Burberry weather. 1. It's perfectly released at this time of year, as the weather takes a downturn into darkness gloomy mornings and early nights in the UK. 2. It highlights the one thing Burberry is best at. Coats and jackets. Everyone and anyone knows that print. 3. It pulls at what the UK is best known for and celebrates. The countryside. 4. Lastly, the cast, no one incredibly showy or obnoxiously loud. Well curated, smart, successful talent. And as a director, I love that it's a series of shorts, all with their own narrative, allowing for the audience to spend more time immersed in the brand. From an advertising POV, it gives you so much more content to play with, more touch points and more opportunities to take advantage of the cast following. As Daniel Lee takes the helm of Burberry to revitalise the brand in its current down turn over the last few years, I think the decision to lean into cinema and storytelling will ensure the legacy lives on over the hope for a one off stand out moment. Clever advertising is the kind that stays with you even when you've finished scrolling and can say something, loudly, by being quiet. Watch it for yourself and tell me what you think!

Buc-ee's, Ltd. Partnered with the CMT Awards in Austin to showcase brand presence via Buc-ee the Beaver. If you're not familiar Buc-ees is running a Monopoly in Texas and has expanded across the US with their innovation to the Gas Station experience. The brand has been built upon their mascot, good eats, and exceptional customer service. Imagine how many more pounds of Beaver Nuggets will be sold because of this partnership? 🤑 Yet, there will be a last click attribution marketer who tells us that you can’t track this marketing effort. There are times you either believe in the brand or you don’t. Buc-ees will continue their dominance because they believe in the brand and they aren't afraid to take calculated risks when going all in with it. #partnerships #marketing #brand
