Overall funding for Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ tenure and forest guardianship has increased by 36% since 2020, with 72% of the increase driven by the IPLC Forest Tenure Pledge. IP- and LC-led funding mechanisms can ensure that more of this funding is channeled to communities’ own local organizations! The Rights and Resources Initiative’s IP- and LC-led funding mechanism, the Community Land Rights and Conservation Finance Initiative (CLARIFI), represents the next generation of an Indigenous-led global movement to secure rights and safeguard nature. By supporting the self-determined priorities of local peoples, CLARIFI ensures that they have agency in shaping their own future. #ThePledgeWeWant Learn more here → clarifirights.org

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, AEL Advocacy stands in solidarity with the Indigenous members of our community. We reflect on the effects of colonization, the residential school system and modern-day anti-Indigenous racism. As we work to protect animals and the land in which they live, we recognize that this is stolen land. This is why we are committed to engaging in reconciliation efforts and promoting a more equitable society. We encourage you to join us in the following: 1) Educating yourself on the injustices of colonialism as well as the impacts of intergenerational trauma 2) Supporting Indigenous organizations, including those working to better animal and environmental conditions in Indigenous communities such as access to clean water 3) Reflect on the destructive impacts of animal agriculture, aquaculture and other colonized practices that harm Indigenous land

Human-elephant conflict is often a symptom, not the disease. When elephants lose their habitat due to human encroachment, they're forced into competition for resources, leading to conflict. Conservation efforts that empower communities to coexist with elephants offer win-win solutions. Communities living alongside elephants have generations of experience understanding their needs and behavior. Engaging them in conservation efforts leverages this invaluable knowledge. By giving communities a stake in conservation, we create a sense of ownership and responsibility for the well-being of both elephants and their environment. #elephants #wildlifeconservation #wildlifelovers #savetheplanet #communityledconservation

It’s critical to engage with collision monitors to understand the dynamics of an existing building; solutions should take into account existing monitoring information and also consider how it would change flight behaviors on site. For new buildings, we have enough data to gauge risks and adjust accordingly to learn from the mistakes of others. New construction is not inherently safe, old buildings are not inherently safe, and they should all be addressed.
Just in time for spring migration, my recent piece in The Conversation looks at NGO advocacy strategies and finding a balance between confrontation and collaboration. I use the case study of FLAP, a Toronto NGO devoted to reducing bird-window collisions, to show how committed volunteers using rigorous data can change the policy and commercial landscape: Feather Friendly® Bird Collision Deterrent Markers Ecojustice Canada Nipissing University

Radiating Hope: Juhi Consulting's Founder/Director Empowers End of Care Landscapes with Creativity and Transformation
🌏 Governance Matters: Commitment to Justice, Equity, and Reconciliation in End-of-Life Care We believe addressing and correcting misinformation surrounding natural burials at Eumundi Cemetery, managed by Sunshine Coast Council is essential. Specifically, there are inaccuracies regarding burial depth and the various natural burial models available. Despite the fact that the latest information sheet on the Council’s website lacks specific details, we advocate for transparency and recommend contacting the Cemetery Services Team for accurate and comprehensive information. In June 2023, during the Climate Conversation at the Floating Land biennial by Noosa Council and Noosa Regional Gallery, we had the opportunity to engage with Sunshine Coast Council representatives, who answered our questions on sustainable practices and the introduction of natural burials. These discussions are necessary as we navigate the complexities of death and dying within an environmental context. Key Takeaways from Our Interaction: 🌱 Natural burials represent a significant step toward sustainable and equitable end-of-life options. 🌱 Governance in cemetery management is vital for ensuring justice and reconciliation within our communities. 🌱 Equitable access to natural burials is essential. 🌱 We must continue to advocate for clear communication and access to information regarding burial processes and regulations. As we move forward, let’s hope we prioritise the values of justice, equity, and reconciliation in all aspects of our work that will help us create a more inclusive approach to end-of-life care. Your contribution is essential and greatly appreciated.
