Is your school's culture thriving? If not, it might be time to look outside the building. The best school leaders get their families bought in. Here are 4 concrete ways how: 1) Personalize communication -- ask your families what they want to see in weekly and monthly communication. Ask how they'd prefer communication to be sent to them. Then, tailor your approach to meet their needs. 2) Find family ambassadors -- find a diverse set of invested families who can bridge the gap between school staff and the wider community. 3) Host inclusive events -- using your family's preferences, plan events at various times and in various formats (virtual and in-person) to accommodate different schedules and comfort levels. 4) Celebrate success together -- share student achievements and school milestones with families, making it clear that their support contributes to these successes. Successful schools know their limitations. And know how to get their families involved to overcome those limitations.

Our team increased community engagement by 60% in just 5 months. How’d we do it? Intentionally and responsively: 1) We Listened. Our number one mission was to build a school that centered around the community that we served. You can’t do that without intentionally listening and including your community as key decision makers. Their voice is the most important voice. 2) We built consistent and predictable communication systems. Doing this built trust and credibility. Our community knew when and how we would communicate and even looked forward to it! 3) Why did they look forward to it? Because we had a good hook. We knew that in order for our families to engage, we had to show them what they wanted to see. In this case, it was their kids!! We were very intentional about ALWAYS including pictures of their kids learning and playing in the communication we sent out. 4) Because we knew our community, we knew how they liked to be communicated with. We made it easy, engaging, and approachable. 5) Lastly, we invited them in. In our mind, our school was the best place in the world and only made better by the involvement of our families. We provided many options for our community to engage, and they did! When you bring an energy like that to an organization, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? What are some of the ways that you have increased engagement in the community you serve? #CommunityEngagement #RelationshipBuilding #InclusiveCommunities #Collaboration #Communication

Whenever I’ve heard people talking about a positive school culture, I always hear the same types of comments. “You can just feel it when you walk into the school.” “The students have high test scores, and there’s not many discipline issues.” “It’s like a family here.” This contributes to the narrative that the pinnacle of a positive school culture is anchored around the performance of students and the feelings of staff. Although those might be elements of a positive school culture, I was never fully satisfied with this perspective. Instead, I believe that the pinnacle of an ideal school culture should be when the identities of a school’s community are so well known that the school’s infrastructure is specifically designed to meet the needs and propel the desires of its community. The processes in place to support the community are essential to the overall sustainability and quality of the school’s culture. Let’s redefine the success of a school culture by the depth in which their community is supported and uplifted through formalized inclusive systems. Do you know a teacher who is tightly gripped by fear of failure? Establishing a workplace culture centered on a growth mindset for all can foster trust and revolutionize your school from within. Imagine being able to cultivate a trust-based school culture, breaking free from one entrenched in fear. The key driver in any school is how the staff feel about themselves and one another and this is affected by the cultural climate. Staff culture, fear and trust do not have a language that is commonly used in schools. It starts with a clear understanding of each other. Wouldn't it be transformative to have open discussions about staff culture, fear, and trust? We all can feel when we are not ok, or indeed when we feel happy in a school, however understanding why and being able to discuss it is tricky. Discover how the Schoolgenie program can empower your school to cultivate an environment of trust. Transforming Schools: Empathy, Listening, and Trust with Schoolgenie.
