The Good CFO • Media, Entertainment, Software/SaaS, Nonprofits • Speaker, Mentor, Impact Investor • Former EP NBC World of Dance • Do good things with good people
One of my favorite stories I share with young entrepreneurs and aspiring leaders is about a time I was tempted with an unethical job offer. When I was 26, still very fresh in my career, I consulted for a company needing a business plan, pitch deck, and financial projections. They had been trying to sell the company for over a year and needed some fresh thinking. After finishing the project, I was invited by the company's CEO to lunch. He was impressed with my work and wanted my help. He told me he was starting a direct competitor and planning to take several key employees with him. I was pretty stunned by the offer. It was a fair amount of money and he painted a picture of an exciting future working with him. Nonetheless, it wasn't right that he was looking to harm the company he was leading. I turned it down immediately. A couple months later, I received a call from one of the company's owners. He told me the CEO and CFO had left notes on their desk that day announcing their immediate resignations. My heart dropped. They actually did it. The owner expressed his admiration for my consulting work as well. He asked if I'd come lead their finance team. I doubt he had seen my resume, and certainly didn't know how young I was. But we struck a deal and I began my first stint as a CFO at age 26. The following year was an incredible ride: - We hired a new CEO who worked with me to craft a new business plan. - I led the company through a successful first audit. - We reduced costs, increased revenue, and doubled profits. - We consummated a successful exit to a private equity group. - I met some of the most important business connections of my career. It's not always easy to follow your values and trust in the justice of ethics. Things could have gone differently for me. However, as leaders (especially CFOs), we can serve as a force modeling the way for what is good and trusting that sometimes the good guys do turn out on top. #karma #values #ethics #leadership #ConfessionsofaCFO

Often talking to students, looking to make career choices, present an opportunity for self reflection in a way that is otherwise difficult in the 'day-to-day' In one such discussion, I was recently asked 'what is the most important skillset for a career in Finance'. Having thought about my own journey in Finance + all the successful leaders I came across and admired ...I concluded that probably the most underrated skill set for a finance leader is the ability to remain calm! ..and its a skill that is super hard to learn-as-you-go. Finance leaders often are privy to a lot of privileged Info, have to have very difficult conversations with internal / external stakeholders and overall have an insight into not only 'what is happening' but also what 'might happen' and what 'should happen' in the future.. Successful leaders neither show overt excitement nor show worry while interacting with teams, other leaders, investors, auditors ..etc etc. (Irrespective of how they internally feel 😊 ) Mantra (easier said than done!): Internalize the possible outcomes (pain or joy) - and plan for it Show and talk only about the way to get 'the joy' and risks to avoid the 'pain'. Unfortunately, technical skills, business partnering, controls, automation are becoming tablestakes .. Would love to hear thoughts ...what do you think makes a great finance leader? #financecareers #musings #calm
