HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd could potentially extend from London Euston to Crewe, as Phase 2a of the project is reportedly being reinstated following a government policy reversal. The government is re-evaluating the cost-benefit analysis to push the railway beyond Birmingham, with an official announcement expected in 2025. This development could ease network bottlenecks, according to rail planning consultant #WilliamBarter, who views it positively. The ongoing narrative surrounding HS2 has seen various policy shifts under different governments, impacting its fate. Phase 1 progresses between Old Oak Common and Birmingham, while discussions on the connection to Euston continue. The divided Phase 2, with sections 2a and 2b, promises enhanced rail connectivity if fully reinstated, a development eagerly awaited by Crewe Town Council for its local impact. High Speed Rail Group chair Dyan Perry emphasised the importance of private investor support for sustained growth, calling for commitment to significant rail projects. Additionally, mayors advocate for a Midlands-North West Rail Link, proposing a new railway between the West Midlands and Manchester, privately funded and operating at 300km/h speed. The group includes Greater Manchester mayor #AndyBurnham and former West Midlands mayor Andy Street, chaired by former Network Rail CEO #DavidHiggins. The potential extension of HS2 to Crewe marks a significant development in the UK's rail infrastructure, with a focus on enhancing connectivity and sustainable growth through private investment and strategic partnerships. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative project. Read more: [https://lnkd.in/epZ5bQCH] New Civil Engineer

When it comes to low-carbon concrete, the building industry can't go it alone. 🛣 Infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, tunnels, rail, sidewalks, seawalls, piers) drive the concrete industry. What transportation agencies demand is what concrete/cement companies bring into the market. 💲 The federal government’s recently announced $1.2 billion (!!) Federal Highway Administration Low Carbon Transportation Materials (LCTM) program has the potential to pave the way to the aspirational future of zero-emissions concrete in the U.S. -- if deployed strategically. 📗 Check out RMI's recommended framework of 4️⃣ low-carbon concrete initiatives to amplify the impact of this federal program. Key concepts applicable for both infrastructure and buildings folks. #infrastructure #concrete #industrialdecarbonization #climatesolutions RMI https://lnkd.in/dfQSfk9h

💰 In 2023, the government spent $476 billion on construction, which is a 25% increase from 2022. The residential market saw a sharp decline for the majority of this year. The UK has spent close to £1B on the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) project, with construction yet to start. For reference, the Laerdal tunnel in Norway cost £140M adjusted for inflation - a 24.5KM tunnel. The direct LTC planning costs of £300M are already 2X the costs of building a much longer tunnel! LTC is now projected to cost upwards of £9B - more than 8-9X the cost for comparable infrastructure projects in Europe per Britain Remade. With a decision on LTC to be made by May 2025, with planning taking place since 2009 - producing a very digestible 359,866 pages... Norway expects to spend £1.74B on a vastly ambitious project to create the world's deepest and longest subsea tunnel - the 27.6KM long Rogfast Tunnel at maximum depth of 400 meters - as part of the wider £36B E39 highway system infrastructure project - the largest infrastructure project in Norwegian history. Why are we spending almost £1B just to *plan* to build a tunnel under the Thames? Norway: https://lnkd.in/ehUPmiDC. UK: https://lnkd.in/euTcngaE

According to a report by American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) over a third of U.S. bridges need major repairs or replacement, with 221,800 requiring repair and 76,175 needing complete replacement. While 49% are in fair condition, there’s been a slight improvement, with 324 fewer bridges rated as poor this year compared to 2023. See more in Construction Dive. https://ow.ly/ItC450TGaxJ

Keeping Britain's roads running smoothly requires constant maintenance and upgrades. This often involves excavations for signage, lighting, and more. But before any digging starts, identifying underground utilities is crucial. Cornerstone Projects is your trusted partner for highways utility searches:
