Charlie Hewlett and I wrote an article for NAIOP about the imperative for companies to thoroughly plan for the succession of the Baby Boomers, of which 10,000 reach retirement age daily in the U.S. Leadership transitions take not only deliberate planning, grooming, and/or hiring, but they also require significant emotional awareness. It's not easy, but the alternative can devastate a company's viability.
