#Buyside or #Sellside? 10 reasons bankers move to the buy side Having recruited in #MarketRisk since 2007, one common topic that arises in conversations with candidates is the choice between the buy side and the sell side and determining the best career path. Historically, the emphasis was on moving to prestigious and 'safer' banks, but the trend has shifted, making the buy side more alluring for several reasons: 1) A more dynamic environment 2) Great flexibility for progression 3) Greater flexibility in working from home (asset managers more than hedge funds) 4) More agile organizations; greater ability to effect change with less bureaucracy 5) Less regulation, leading to reduced reporting 6) Focus on adding true value to the Portfolio Manager/Trader 7) Direct involvement with Portfolio Management/Trading 8) Broader exposure to risk, including Liquidity, Counterparty, and Market Risk 9) Broader product exposure, often involving multiple products in PM strategies 10) Higher total compensation The shift from Banking Market Risk to Asset Management or Hedge Fund Investment Risk is now in high demand, with a few exceptions.
