« Design, it would seem, is taking a turn for the local. Increasingly, designers are rediscovering practices once considered outdated in order to transform whatever is available around them into sources of material - often with a highly contemporary twist. » On March 03, 2024 during #MATTERandSHAPE –– Jil Sander Design Talks, Denis Montel (RDAI), Octave Perrault (Zeroth Systems), Julia DAKA (Sadaka) examined the act of “curating” materials as a form of practice that is central to design today, while also considering the role of technology and research in making the transition to a new ethics of design practice possible. « This conversation explores the delicate balance between sustaining craft traditions and embracing the inevitable tide of change, speculating on how custom, innovation and technology can converge to embody both creativity and environmental responsibility. » #JILSANDER design talk MATIÈRE & FORME curated by Space Caviar, moderated by Andrew Jayers #MATTERandSHAPE Photography: © Mickael Llorca

This is a really interesting article. I don't necessarily agree on the premise - that everything is getting uglier, as I happen to like both modern and mixed estetique, and I think things should represent the era it is made in, but the article sure is a good read. The article discusses the prevalence of ugliness in modern architecture, industrial design, cinematography, and branding, despite advanced production and design technologies. It explores the reasons behind this trend, including economic and technological shifts, as well as societal aesthetic preferences and values. PS: many things are for sure getting less eye-candy-ish, Art Noveau is probably nicer than a modern glass facade, but isn't beauty mostly a question about personal taste? #development #sustainabledevelopment #placebranding https://lnkd.in/dgiBBAWZ

Style out of the box – #Fashionary is dedicated to the #design and production of resources tailored for professional #fashion designers and fellow fashionistas. #Stylepedia serves as a comprehensive guide and encyclopedic reference of global styles and subcultures that have emerged over the past century. As a tribute to the importance of #style, the cover design of Stylepedia has been thoughtfully crafted to embody the idea ‘style out of the box’. The design showcases a debossed rectangle, overlaid with a subtly distorted white rectangle, serving as a visual metaphor that symbolizes the concept of thinking outside the box when it comes to style. To further underscore the concept of style, the book is set in a vibrant shade of blue, complemented by a striking green edge colour. This green edge colour forms a contrast with the blue, lending an aesthetically pleasing style to the book. The spine of the book features slanted #typography for the book’s information, an unconventional design choice that adds a dynamic visual element. This makes the book stand out on a bookshelf and subtly alludes to the book’s theme of exploring styles that are unconventional. #ArtDirection #Editorial #Print #BookDesign See full case here: https://lnkd.in/gnqKbrPG

Who truly discerns the essence of design's origins? Design, often hailed as the primordial art form of mankind, holds a revered status as the foundational discipline within the realm of academic art. It serves as the bedrock upon which creative ideation and the production of visually captivating artworks are built, encompassing the meticulous processes of conceptualization and sketching. Consequently, mastery in this domain commands profound admiration among connoisseurs of the arts. For me, design transcends mere aesthetics; it embodies a sacred endeavor and a transformative odyssey along the path of human evolution. It signifies a journey commencing from the very moment humanity embarks on a voyage through abstract thought and boundless imagination, transcending the confines of earthly limitations. Throughout my journey, I've continuously challenged myself with a myriad of design endeavors, each serving as a crucible for personal growth and artistic exploration. Among these, the task of designing and illustrating self-portraits stands as a testament to my artistic journey. https://lnkd.in/dbHgUw_9 #selfportrait #illustrationart #graphicdesign #adobeillustrator #abstractart #drawing #colors #design #art

As a designer, I love merging calligraphic elements with modern design principles to blend tradition with innovation. It's all about capturing emotions, telling stories, and creating designs that leave a lasting impact. I recently designed this wedding invitation from scratch, and it was such a rewarding experience. I personalized everything—from the lettering inside to the wax seals. Every detail was crafted to reflect the couple’s unique journey. Seeing their joy and knowing the invite set the perfect tone for their special day was incredibly fulfilling. This experience reminded me that design is more than just aesthetics—it's about connecting with people on a deeper level. How do you bring heritage and personal stories into your design process? Hey Connections! "Art doesn’t just exist—it grows, it drips, it evolves. 🌿🖌️ This piece is a reflection of how design can mirror nature: organic, fluid, and constantly changing. Each element drips and merges, symbolizing the fluid connection between art and the organic world. GRAPHIC DESIGN is not just about aesthetics—it's about creating movement and meaning from the environment around us. Here’s my take on blending nature with structure. GRAPHIC by nature, creative by choice. 🌲✨ #DesignEvolution #GraphicDesign #NatureInDesign #CreativeFlow #DigitalArtistry"

Die Planergruppe has made it its mission to make (urban) landscapes tangible and usable for around 50 years. The fiftieth anniversary not only brought with it a new name, but also a comprehensive redesign and a book publication. The black bar from the word mark is a consistent theme in the new design, symbolizing structure, coherence, and contrast. The visual style is defined by a clear grid system and dynamic interplay between static layouts and lively project images. The publication “WIR. 50 Jahre Landschaft in Transformation” builds on this system. The element of the bar is also continued and transferred to the typographic layout area in various ways - for example, through the arrangement of text elements or the use of indents and headlines. The project is characterized by three typefaces from the “Söhne Collection” (Klim Type Foundry) and two typefaces from the “PP Writer” (Pangram Pangram Foundry). While the branding of Die Planergruppe has been characterized by the Söhne character from the very beginning (“Söhne is the memory of Akzidenz-Grotesk framed through the reality of Helvetica.”), it is complemented within the publication by the PP Writer serif font. Public Art Commission unveiled 2024: Sydney, Sculptural installation facade commissioned by Warren & Mahoney Architects
miniature cotton on plastic grid 34 x 37 cm Currently exhibited at Australian Tapestry Workshop in the Kate Derum International Tapestry Award, til 18.10.2024 This work 'miniature' is from a tapestry project that relates to my interest in developing a system to explore forms of mathematical patterns, and connecting this to forms from the built landscape. Each panel is built on a plastic grid and relates to a system that explores fixed parameters- the warp count is 90 and the weft 70. Even with the constraints, there is a wealth of possibilities to explore and new surfaces and intervals to invent. There is a rhythm developed using different accumulated stitches which also reveals the nature of the thread, and the relationship between pattern and colours. The title refers to ‘La Miniatura’ the name of Frank Lloyd Wrights first house in a series known as Textile Block houses. Built in 1923 in Southern California it was Wrights first attempt to use a flexible building system, which formed interior and exterior surfaces of the house. The hand cast concrete blocks which had a decorative element were of a relatively small scale, and they allowed Wright to design a house that closely related to its site. This particularly interested me, and I was inspired to develop tapestry works that examine how structure determines patterns which are related to scale and have an invisible logic. Expanding this system through repetition and instinct, I am able to create new compositions due to the patterns devised from the divisions, into a type of topography. #contemporaryartist #contemporarytextiles #contemporarymaps #contemporarycraft #textileandplace #newwork #experiments #fieldwork #landscape #textile #patterns #handcraft #womenartists #danaharrisartist #danaharris

My latest Manipulation is inspired by the concept of standing out even in the simplest details. 🐑✨ Concept: The idea of blending the traditional with the modern to create a unique identity. The sheep is not just a symbol of softness and nature but also represents confidence and distinction. By adding a contemporary touch with sunglasses and dark colors, I aimed to convey the idea of uniqueness even in simple elements. Design is an art that transcends boundaries and expresses unique ideas and visions. What do you think of this blend between authenticity and modernity?
