Had a great time at Silverstone with Airwallex and McLaren Racing on behalf of Eastside Co this weekend. Hearing from David Coulthard on what it takes to win in F1 reminded me of a chat some time ago about the Exeter Chiefs culture as described by Kai Horstmann. Success at the highest level stems from a culture of measurement and data, where constructive criticism is embraced without personal feelings. It's about working collectively towards winning, fostering a mindset that everyone is on the same side. Achieving this approach in business, where work is often viewed as just a job to pay the wages in the persuit of other goals, poses challenges. Can the culture of excellence be truly realised in a business setting? It's definitely an aspirational goal worth pursuing. One element that clearly helps is the dispassionate use of data and numbers as an independent and consensual measure of success. It makes feedback less personal. There must also be an acceptance from all in the team that the sharing of feedback is necessary in order to reach the shared goal. Finally it must be given and recieved with respect. 6 weeks!! is all it took for France to fall to German strategy in WWII. Assumption that Germans would take broader route through Belgium and German tanks can't cross Ardennes forest. Lack of leadership, tactical and intelligence failure - made a mockery of a nation. French were too arrogant to be preparing for imminent war! 2023/24: Formula 1. Two of the lousiest drivers (both French!! ) and a new team manager who has never been on the spot as a team principal in formula 1 !! that's Not glory in taking up a challenge - that's outright arrogance and balderdash!! To say I don't know this business, but I can figure it out - will come at a cost. It's called core competency Monsieur!!! It takes more than bravado. Underestimating what it needs for a team to win, what is the backdrop of the team and the appeasement culture ( does he know French?, does he know French well enough?? - are not questions that a team should be asking!! ) 2 times DNF in a single year - 1st time in Formula 1 history!! What were the French waiting for? to conspire and fire the man who was doing his job!! 6th Rank!! is where the French arrogance led it's Formula 1 team - Alpine to. Circle seems complete eh? With Renault engine - which has a history of being unreliable ( thrown out by Christian Horner)?

2024: A Year of Resilience & Pride. A few hours to 2025 and I have been thinking about my year especially the last 90 days - a whirlwind introduction to life at Williams Racing. My task was clear: start embedding our People Promise across the team. My reaction? 'Woah..a role of a lifetime and how possible or tough will this be?' Enter the question I am asked a handful of times a week: How does it feel to work at Williams Racing? My answer? It hasn’t changed since day one and it’s even more true today: 'This is where pride and awe have come together for me. An entirely new way to feel about ‘work’.' 2024 has been a year where resilience has been the core of our journey. Through soaring highs and gut-wrenching blows, we stood firm as a team, 1,056 relentless heartbeats all proud, all resilient, all galvanized by very human, warm and world-class leadership. This is one of the few places I’ve worked where the mission isn’t just words it’s lived every day. A vision so sharp and audacious it’s inspiring. A team so aligned it’s electrifying. And every interaction is a true expression of our People Promise. In just 90 days, I’ve experienced what it means to be part of an extraordinary team. It’s not just about racing; it’s about unwavering determination, belief in one another, and the grit to keep moving forward, no matter what. As I finish 2024, watching this video, I feel something I can’t quite describe. A mix of pride, gratitude, that feeling you have at the top of a rollercoaster. And I love it. 2025 is going to be BIG. What’s it take to pick a winning racehorse? 🐎 Many consider pedigree, temperament, the jockey, type of track, odds to win, etc. to include the less-strategic items such as name, color and number. And, in the end, how much are we leveraging skill vs luck? This is fairly similar to how business decisions are made at times- a lot of variables to consider, capabilities and expertise to leverage, data gathered for predictions and proof, but sometimes it includes a bit of luck with timing, alignment, fit, and relationships. The benefits of combining both are shown here with our ITA Group team having fun at the Del Mar track! We all had different strategies and we each had some winners but more importantly we enjoyed being together…and with a little luck, will plan it again sometime soon!
