“The cost of inaction is far too high - for individuals, for nations, and for the world.” In Africa, climate change isn’t just an environmental challenge; it’s a public health emergency. 50% of public health emergencies in Africa in the last two decades were climate-related and diseases like malaria are spreading to new regions as temperatures rise, while health budgets struggle to keep up. Economic losses from health impacts could reach $11-20 trillion by 2050 in low- and middle-income countries. In his latest piece, Dr. Githinji Gitahi Group CEO of AMREF Health Africa, outlines how Africa can reimagine health systems to withstand climate shocks, protect vulnerable communities, and accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage. 💡 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eYAkSeNa #UniversalHealthCoverage #ClimateAction #GlobalHealth

Been a great opportunity at Impact Africa Consulting Limited to be of service to the #African continent as the world convened in #CapeTown on the #onehealthcongress. We are working to develop a #strategic #framework for the climate and health nexus for #Africa, an opportunity that we cannot trade for anything. Some of the emerging themes includes: 1. Changing climate conditions are increasing heat-related illnesses and deaths; changing the patterns of infectious disease transmission, making deadly disease outbreaks and pandemics more likely 2. Intensifying health impacts from extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, wildfires, and windstorm. 3. #Climatechange exerts significant strains on health systems, simultaneously increasing demand for health services whilst also impairing the system’s ability to respond. 4. The World Bank data confirms that a warmer climate could lead to at least 21 million additional deaths by 2050 from just five health risks: #extremeheat, #stunting, #diarrhea, #malaria, and #dengue. Based on the above one health approach the only way to intervene. Close #collaborations, #knowledge building and sharing, #capacitybuilding, #policy and advocacy and #innovation will be some of the initiatives that will require strengthening in the #africa member states to reduce the impacts of climate change to the #health systems.

The global climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but an immediate reality, with severe repercussions for public health. From rising temperatures to increased natural disasters, the interconnectedness of climate change and health is undeniable. As the impacts of climate change intensify, vulnerable populations, including the youth, are among those most affected and can be powerful advocates for change. As a result, Nigeria Health Watch will be hosting their Future of Health Youth Pre-Conference on the 23rd of October 2024 with the theme - Amplifying youth voices for climate-health action. #Nigeriahealthwatch #climatechange #health #youth To register, please click the link below; https://lu.ma/ke0nh91a

🌍 Climate Change and TB: A Silent Connection We Can't Ignore Did you know that Tanzania recorded 128,000 estimated TB cases and 18,100 deaths in 2022 alone? These numbers are not just statistics—they are a wake-up call Climate change is silently fueling the spread of TB. Rising temperatures, humidity shifts, and extreme weather displace vulnerable communities, forcing them into overcrowded spaces with poor ventilation—the perfect breeding ground for TB bacteria. But here's the good news: We can act! We can break this vicious cycle by tackling climate change and prioritizing health infrastructure Together, we can save lives, protect communities, and build a healthier, climate-resilient Tanzania. It's time to connect the dots between climate and health. Will you join the fight against TB in the era of climate change? Did you know that the top 10 countries with the shortest life expectancies are all in Africa? Behind this statistic lie profound challenges – from health epidemics like HIV/AIDS and malaria to famine, drought, and conflict. While investments in health coverage have made strides against diseases, the continent faces a rise of noncommunicable diseases, the ongoing exploitation of its natural resources and labour, and the devastating effects of climate change. These conditions pose serious threats to the health of the continent and its people. The exploitation of natural resources and labour in not just the African continent, but across the Global South, has been ongoing for centuries, transformed from slavery and colonisation to unjust contemporary global financial systems. The extraction of resources and labour by high-income countries and transnational corporations for the sake of corporate greed and global consumerism have contributed to conflict, widespread inequality, and poor quality of life. In the Global South, over 3.3 billion people live in countries that spend more on debt interest payments than on health and education. Having #TheRealConversation confronts the ongoing injustice in the Global South, tackling the economic exploitation of the Global North. It's more than just health – it's about justice and equity for all. #HealthEquity #GlobalHealth

In the lead-up to World Science Day for Peace and Development, we’re shining a spotlight on how science can help combat the impact of climate change in northern Uganda and beyond. 🌍 Our latest blog post dives into how climate change is impacting public health in Uganda: 1️⃣ Food insecurity: Unpredictable weather patterns lead to poor crop yields, food shortages, and malnutrition, especially affecting young children. 2️⃣ Increased disease: Rising temperatures and poor sanitation drive the spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and malaria. 3️⃣ Wellbeing strain: Stress from rising food prices, failed crops, and worsening living conditions is affecting mental health, especially among women, children, and the elderly. To find out how we're utilising science to address these challenges, head to bit.ly/4h9rgbj #LoveMercy #CentsforSeeds #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #Uganda #ScienceForChange #FoodInsecurity #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #WorldScienceDayforPeaceandDevelopment
