I walked away from this past week's inaugural National Sustainability Society conference carrying plenty of tasty brain food to munch on in the coming weeks, months, and probably years. A few standout takeaways: 1. Sustainability scientists, to put it simply, have been doing some crazy cool work. It was inspiring to see them present their projects, especially those that were pushing the boundaries between study and action for progress. I'm grateful to have gotten the opportunity to hear them speak directly, for once, vs. just reading about their work in a journal or press release. 2. Academia needs creatives! We creative professionals know we rely on academia's science to understand our targets and the systems in which we work. But architects, designers, and our other private-sector cousins have a lot to offer in return. We are inventive problem-solvers by nature. We regularly envision possible futures. We are storytellers. We aren't afraid to dismiss assumptions - regardless of how long-standing or well-honored they are - and counter them with prompts of "Why not?" and "What if we could?" There is ample opportunity, then, for us to join forces and help build the bridges between scientists' work and the futures we need to reach. (This is exciting!) 3. Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration. If there was an overarching theme to be filtered out of the sessions I attended, it was this. We must keep encouraging cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary, and cross-sector collaboration opportunities. No one group can carry the load of transformational sustainable change alone! So keep silo-breaking. Learn to spot barriers (of knowledge, responsibility scope, language, politics, paradigm, whatever) and then use the twin powers of Empathy and Curiosity to chip away at them. 4. Wisdom comes in many forms. Indigenous wisdom, for example, was brought up over and over again throughout the week, which to me was a pleasant surprise and offered a palate cleanser to the Western view I'm normally operating under. Several great sessions offered tips for seeking out those pockets of wisdom and for giving them space, grace, and ownership in these world re-building conversations we're having. 5. It never hurts to ask "the dumb question" in a room of people much smarter than you! You're opening up the door to learn something new - and you'd be surprised how many other people there are glad you asked. Be brave. Be humble. Ask the stupid question. A special shout-out to the folks who were gracious with their time and happy to indulge in fun one-on-one chats throughout the week. I hope you each enjoyed those chats even a fraction as much as I did. Keep up the great work, NSS peeps. I'll be pulling on the same rope right there with you. Cheers!

The Sustainability Network  Joining Forces for a Sustainable Tomorrow: The Sustainability Network! 🌍 Crafting a sustainable future for all Earth's inhabitants is a complex challenge, best tackled together. Sustainability is a collective endeavor, requiring the combined efforts of all. No individual can singlehandedly build the sustainable, climate-neutral future our planet urgently demands. 💡 Guided by the principles of "Sustainability," "Action," and "Unity," a consortium of representatives from companies within the life science community regularly convenes to discuss and take coordinated action on sustainability. These gatherings, orchestrated by us, provide the platform empowering representatives to unite in their shared mission of forging a more sustainable future. 🤝 To shed light on why collaborative sustainability efforts are paramount and share valuable takeaways from these meetings, we turn to the voices of those actively involved.
