In this meta-analytical review comprising both real-world and randomized controlled studies, the use of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOAC) analogs in low body weight patients (body weight of <60 kg or BMI<18 kg/m2) with atrial fibrillation was associated with increased risks of stroke-related events, composite outcomes, and mortality compared to non-low body weight patient cohorts. At the same time, there was no significant difference in terms of major bleeding events. This finding has provided the first resolution of pervading uncertainty surrounding the use of DOAC analogs in these patient cohorts and suggests the need for follow-up confirmatory systematic studies in this group of patients. Pulmonary complications (PC) are common after esophagectomy - their impact on long-term survival is not defined 📚 Systematic review - included studies evaluated the effect of PC on long-term survival 🔎 11 studies - 3423 patients ✅ 🎯 At 60-month follow-up, patients experiencing PC live an average of 8.5 months less compared with those not experiencing PC (p < 0.001) 🎯 Patients experiencing PC seem to have significantly shorter CSS (8 months; p < 0.001) and DFS (5.4 months; p = 0.005) https://lnkd.in/d_PGi2Gh Michele Manara Davide Bona Calin Popa Diana Schlanger Antonio Biondi Ewen Griffiths Luigi Bonavina

Our team at identifeye HEALTH believes the eye has the potential to become the non-invasive diagnostic platform of our time. The retina is more than just a window into eye health - it’s one of the most powerful tools for early detection of systemic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and even neurological disorders. Yet, with so many people missing regular eye exams, we’re losing critical opportunities for early intervention. Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the identifeye Camera, an AI-powered retinal imaging platform designed to make retinal screenings more accessible. Our initial focus is on diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness that is often detected too late. By applying consumer product development principles, we’ve created a device that requires minimal training, is intuitive to use, and operates via a self-guided app. Our aim is for busy medical assistants - and eventually patients themselves - to administer the test with ease, seamlessly fitting into existing workflows with minimal hands-on time. We aim to make retinal screenings as common and accessible as taking someone’s blood pressure or checking their vitals during annual physicals. I sat down with Marion W. from Medtech Insight to discuss this milestone and what's next for the company. Read my story to learn how by leveraging AI, we are not only reducing barriers to eye care but also unlocking the potential of the retina to transform health diagnostics. 🔍 Study Highlights Importance of Functional Mitral Regurgitation (FMR) in Acute Decompensated Heart Failure Outcomes 💡 Research by Rachna Kataria, MD, Francesco Castagna, Shivank Madan, Paul Kim, MD, MPH, MBA, QME, FACOEM, Omar Saeed, Yaw A Adjepong, Angelos Arfaras-Melainis, cynthia taub, Mario J Garcia, Azeem Latib, and Ulrich P Jorde reveals that the severity of Functional Mitral Regurgitation (FMR) on admission predicts long-term risks in patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Key takeaways: 📊 Over 50% of patients had moderate or severe FMR, linked to higher 1-year mortality and increased rehospitalization within 6 months. 📊Female patients were independently associated with higher FMR severity. 📈 Intensified post-discharge follow-up is crucial to managing FMR and reducing risks. This study emphasizes the need for timely intervention and further research into sex-related disparities in FMR outcomes. https://lnkd.in/d5TTscAh #HeartFailure #MitralRegurgitation #Cardiology #MedicalResearch #CME #HeartHealth #FMR #PatientCare

Being close to #Patients, #Customers and #Teams Significant changes in health care delivery have created an increased reliance on ambulatory care - home became also the place of care to ensure the resilience of the healthcare system. Among others, several infusion therapies have been adapted to home treatment. This week in Sweden, with our #NordicInfuCare Teams, specialized in infusion treatment at home for patients suffering from chronic diseases like Diabetes, Immunology, Pain, Neurology/Parkinson, Cardiology, Pulmonology, we deep dived on how to improve quality of their life. 2 examples of what does it concretely mean? ➡ To avoid complications and to ensure compliance, NordicInfu Care has developed, in collaboration with the medical community, Patient Support Programs for several of its treatments. It is essential to identify patients that could benefit from a specific home support, and to provide them with the #personalizedcare with tools, training, coaching and motivation they need. ➡ In Diabetes, we are committed to improving #qualityoflife for our patients. Our healthcare teams provide patients and their loved ones with education, support and personalisation of care. We developed a platform to answer their questions and to help them to manage their disease daily. Our mission? #makingdiabeteseasier Congrats to Josef SMEDS, Mikael WIDLUND, Madeleine WALLDING, Kristoffer MEYNER, Magnus TOTTIE, Christian THIELMANN, Anna RAHMBERG and their Teams for making this happen! We are thrilled to #announce a groundbreaking #collaboration with Google to tackle the serious issue of diabetic retinopathy and prevent blindness. By integrating Google’s advanced #AI technology into our #retinal imaging systems, we’re enabling real-time screenings that provide instant feedback for timely interventions. Google has licensed the model to further enhance our capabilities, ensuring that the AI #technology we deploy is effective and reliable. Our primary focus is on rural and semi-urban areas with limited access to #quality eye care, and this #association will help us reach those who need it most, making a #significant impact on preventing vision loss. Nearly half of people with diabetes will develop diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness without early detection and treatment. To address this, Google Health collaborated with healthcare providers and health-tech partners across India and Thailand to expand diabetic retinopathy screenings using our AI-model, Automated Retinal Disease Assessment (ARDA). Over the next 10 years, our partners plan to deliver 6 million AI-supported screenings to resource-constrained communities at no cost to patients. Learn more: https://goo.gle/4dRqM6s

Beta-blockers are the mainstay of secondary prevention after Acute Myocardial Infarction. However, their role is under scrutiny in patients who underwent successful revascularization and had excellent post-PCI cardiac function (EF> 50%). This new open-label study from Sweden studied more than 5,000 patients with preserved EF for more than three and a half years and found no added benefits regarding the end point of death from beta-blockers. So, is it time to discontinue this class of drug from post-MI patients with excellent heart function? There is still not enough data and, there is no commentary on the morbidities like arrhythmias, etc in this study. We need to study more about this before concluding anything. You can read more about this study here: #NEJM #BetaBlockers #Opinion

Ultrasound is more than a pretty picture—accurate diagnostic imaging is often the catalyst for a treatment plan that leads to wellness. Take this analysis for example. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (a highly uncomfortable condition) who were monitored by ultrasound experienced reduced time to changes in treatment and ultimately, remission.
