Helping conscientious health professionals achieve personally aligned success | Professional Identity Coach | Dietitian | Creator of StreamAhead | Author
There’s a tension that can arise at different stages of our careers in healthcare. This tension is between our personal aspirations and what others expect of what we do with our expertise. Others can be: ➡ Your manager ➡ Your association/governing body ➡ Your colleague ➡ Your partner ➡ Your family The challenge comes in being honest with ourselves when they don’t align, and to pursue our own path regardless. I was there six years ago when I stepped back from clinical practice after investing heavily in that workstream. People expected me to continue on that path. When you put yourself in their shoes, it made sense really. But it was no longer sustainable, no longer for me. But I felt the expectation though. You will have well-meaning people give you advice. But you'll also have people secretly wishing they dared to choose like you. It shouldn't stop you either way. If you are unsure what path or focus aligns with you in healthcare, check out Career Cliniq's StreamAhead Assessment, a workstream interest profiling tool just for healthcare professionals. Your family and friends will judge you. Your colleagues and managers will judge you. Random strangers you meet at a party will judge you. 🙃 This is the reality for most healthcare professionals seeking alternative and non-traditional career paths. We're often made to feel guilty or ashamed for wanting to do something new and for not following the status-quo. We're made to feel guilty when we decide we don't want to sacrifice every aspect of our lives for a traditional clinical career. We want to help people, it's what drives most of us to get into healthcare....but we also want more. We want supportive, caring, non-toxic teams. We want good pay (which is the absolute least we deserve). We want more time to rest and more time with our family and friends. We want time to connect with our personal needs and to look after our own health. But sadly, we can't always find that within the current systems we work for. So we try to forge new paths because we don't just want to survive, we want to thrive - like so many others do! But the fear of judgement stops way too many of us. Alongside the judgement, the endless persuasive voices telling us to "just stick it out another couple of years" or "just hit the next milestone" convinces us to stay on paths we aren't quite sure we want to be on. Judgement and stigma can be extremely powerful tools in preventing us from building the type of career that we really love and that really energises us. Far too many of us are far too miserable, for far too long, because of the fear of judgment. But you know what? It's coming anyway!!!! Whether you do what you want to do or not, you will ALWAYS be judged by SOMEONE out there. So in the end all that's really left to say is...go ahead and judge me, I'm forging my own path whether you like it or not. Diversifying Your Skills for Non-Clinical Opportunities in a Dynamic World More than 50% of my 20 year career as an Occupational Therapist has been spent in a variety of non-clinical positions. In today’s rapidly changing professional landscape, the concept of a linear career path is increasingly becoming outdated. With healthcare constantly evolving, technology advancing, and global events reshaping the workforce, healthcare professionals are recognizing the value of diversifying their careers. By expanding your skill set, identifying transferrable skills to other positions, and embracing flexibility, you can unlock new opportunities and future-proof your career to attract non-clinical job opportunities. Diversifying your career may involve navigating uncharted territory, where outcomes are uncertain. Embrace the uncertainty as part of the journey, and stay open to new experiences and opportunities that may arise along the way. Diversifying your career is not just about survival in a competitive job market; it’s about thriving in an environment full of possibilities. By taking proactive steps to broaden your skills, expand your network, and embrace new opportunities, you can create a more fulfilling and resilient non-clinical career.
