In honor of Black History Month, let us take a moment to recognize the Black American pioneers who have made significant contributions to healthcare in the United States. From innovative surgical procedures to first-of-their-kind medical devices, their legacies continue to benefit patients and healthcare professionals alike. The Black Angels (1929–ca. 1961) As tuberculosis ravaged New York City in the early 1900s, patients could not stay in regular hospitals. The Sea View hospital in Staten Island, a tuberculosis facility that opened in 1913, ended up caring for thousands of patients who were unable to afford care at more expensive sanitariums. But did you know that the Black Angels, a group of brave and tenacious nurses from the Jim Crow South, helped make the hospital a success? In her new book, "The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis," Maria Smilios details how the city recruited hundreds of Black nurses to fill vacancies left by white nurses who left in droves. Despite working in grueling and unsafe conditions, the Black Angels contributed to the development of isoniazid, an antibiotic to treat tuberculosis, by administering the drug to patients and collecting massive amounts of data on how it affected them. In 1951, this data was part of a breakthrough trial showing the effectiveness of isoniazid in treating the disease. Despite their contributions, the Black Angels were underpaid and discriminated against. Tables in Sea View's cafeteria were marked “for whites only” even though the hospital was one of just four municipal hospitals in New York that otherwise didn’t discriminate against Black nurses. But their hard work and dedication ultimately helped to save tens of millions of lives. Sea View hospital closed in 1961 due to lack of patients, but the legacy of the Black Angels lives on. Let's take a moment to appreciate and honor the sacrifices and contributions of these incredible nurses. #BlackHistoryMonth #WomenInMedicine #MedicalPioneers #TheBlackAngels #MariaSmilios #nurses #blacknurses #BlackHealthFacts #strength #unity #togetherweadvance #EliteInsuranceAssociates

🧠 Tip of the Day: Epilepsy First Aid Essentials 🚑 Di you know that in the event of a seizure, knowing the right first aid steps can make a significant difference? Our epilepsy manager and activist FREDRICK BEUCHI takes us through these vital steps in our latest video demonstration. 🎥 Watch it to the end and empower yourself to assist others in need! Here are some key steps to keep in mind when assisting someone during a seizure: Stay Calm: Your reassurance can make a difference. Time the Seizure: Note how long it lasts. If it exceeds 5 minutes, seek medical help. Protect from Harm: Gently guide the person to the ground and remove any nearby hazards. Place on Their Side: This helps keep the airway clear. The Ministry of National Defense, Republic of Korea is pushing to establish its own medical school due to the low application rates for long-term military doctors. With only 180 long-term doctors out of 2,400, the ministry looks to models like the U.S. Uniformed Services University and Japan's National Defense Medical College. However, significant opposition from the medical community poses a challenge. The Korea Medical Association emphasizes the need to address fundamental issues affecting military doctors rather than establishing new institutions. #Healthcare #MilitaryMedicine #MedicalEducation

History Facts Today – History of hospitals in Greensboro, NC Greensboro, NC, is very fortunate to have a lot of excellent medical facilities. Going back in history, Greensboro always provided places to care for the wounded and sick. Even during the bloody Civil War, soldiers were shipped to the “Gate City” and various hospitals, and “makeshift hospitals” cared for the wounded. The First Presbyterian Church served as a hospital during the end of the war in March 1865. One building from the original church houses today the Greensboro Historical Museum. Today, Greensboro is lucky to have “state-of-the-art” hospitals in the city and surrounding areas. more: https://lnkd.in/e3hQ28xr #Thursday #history #nursesweek #medicalstaff #explore #tourguide #greensboro #hospitals

Nurse Educator | Leader | Professional Development Specialist | An empowered nurse who strives to empower fellow nurses through continuing education and professional development.
Last week, I had the privilege of spending a few days in the UK, exploring the rich history and charm of London, Oxford, Bath Spa, and Salisbury. As I wandered through the cobbled paths, I couldn't help but marvel at the centuries-old structures that have withstood the test of time. These buildings, with their scars and imperfections, stand not just as monuments of history but as symbols of enduring strength and resilience. It struck me how these ancient structures mirror our own personal and professional journeys. Just as these buildings bear the marks of time, we too carry the scars of our struggles and challenges. Yet, it's these very imperfections that make us stronger, more beautiful, and uniquely resilient. No matter what life brings our way—whether it's changes in our circumstances or people coming and going from our lives—let's keep moving forward with the same resilience and grace as those timeless structures. The journey may not always be easy, but it is through perseverance that we build our own legacy, one step at a time. #Resilience #PersonalGrowth #ProfessionalJourney #Nurses #NursesOnLinkedin
