#FamilyLaw clients who communicate well are surprised when lawyers or mediators suggest communication apps to create a record between parties/parents who threaten, disparage, refuse to respond, intimidate or blame each other for the situation or crisis. If consistency and stability are the foundation for custody, communication is the foundation for parenting overall. Respect, empathy and the 3 Bs (brief, basic, benign) rule. This episode with Dr. Stuart Shanker talks about not confusing a child's "Misbehavior" with Stress behaviour. 💚 With all kids and especially neurodivergent and twice exceptional* kids - it's critical we don't punish stress behaviour and deal with it compassionately. 🔥 The greater the stress load- the more "kindled" or easily-triggered a child is - the more likely they are to have outbursts. Sounds obvious right? I’m raising half a dozen boys. (I know when I say half a dozen you think donuts 🍩 but stick with me here. 😉 Two are in college and I have four teenage boys at home, busy with all the things boys love including soccer, track, rugby, waterpolo and acting classes. All of this work, which includes mothering, coaching, staying positive, listening, motivating, persuading, showing up consistly—and leadership has made me passionate about nurturing their and my emotional intelligence. (To be able to lead them in this, I have to grow my own.) Men account for 75% of today’s suicides. As parents, we must normalize and model emotional health for our sons. 💕 Their lives may depend on it. This was the very topic I discussed with podcaster and parent coach, Therese (Tess) Connolly, LCSW last Friday. Tess, thank you again 🙏 for hosting me and creating the space! In the podcast (link in the comments)- 💡 We unpack the 4 components of EQ 💡 I share how I attempt to nurture it in my kids during the teen years, even through sibling rivalary. EQ isn’t fixed. It can be develped in us and our kids. It’s never too late! How have you invested in the development of your own EQ and/or that of your kids?

What could be a positive proactive successful post here on LinkedIN? What can I write in this post to actually get the attention, create a dialogue, connect with people who truly feel a desire to be a part of the conversation around the mental health crisis surrounding our youth? Who truly wants to support, advocate, get behind projects that can help heal and offer new perspectives to the problems? Who hears in their mind when they think on the mental health crisis in our youth many answers to the problems? Like banning phones in schools, banning social media for kids under 16, getting kids out there playing with each other in person, in safe environments and extracurriculars. Who is out there wanting to be a part of a feature film, tv series or new play about these subjects? A project that can raise up the awareness and conversation around mental health in our youth through art, storytelling and community. As an actor, writer and filmmaker in certain marketplaces; it feels like there are small tiny itty bitty little cracks in the systems in place that offer possible opportunities for an artist like me to get a project off the ground, and I am not going to stop until that tiny bit of light opens up for me to enter. Storytelling is how we all learn about each other. How history teaches us. How philosophy, messages, ideas, opinions and growth happen. How generations after generations find a sense of worthiness, safety, fulfillment and lovability within their relationships and interpersonal experiences. There are some positives within the speed of the Information Age and technology, but for young people social media takes advantage and spreads extreme messages. Look at the level of antisemitism spreading around college and universities spread evil and hatred. I have been educated at the highest level in my field of acting and writing. It is not foreign to me how hard my industry is to make a living, find success and create wonderful collaborations. It is tough at times for us to lift ourselves up, dust off the past four years of changes to our world since COVID and do some thing good for our children. As parents, it's crucial to manage our emotional triggers, not just for our child's well-being but also for our own personal growth. Understanding our triggers allows us to make better decisions and act more consciously. Let's mentor our children from a position of strength, not victimhood. When we choose emotional freedom and positivity, we inspire our kids to do the same. It's time to let go of old baggage and create a brighter future for ourselves and our children.
