Our Primary pilot, #StartSmallDreamBig, aims to bring career-related learning from the margins to the mainstream of education. Enriching the day-to-day curriculum with #careers education early on offers an opportunity to smooth the transition between primary and the careers education system at secondary school level. Initial insights from Wave 1 of the pilot show positive outcomes for schools, pupils, and employers 👇 ⭐ 64% of teachers said their pupils’ confidence about future employment options available to them had increased. ⭐ Improvement in school careers provision and leadership commitment with 55% (up 14%) including careers content in the curriculum. ⭐ Girls showed increased interest in non-traditional ‘female’ career areas including law, business, finance and construction. A bit late from my end but it has been absolutely incredible to work on the Start Small; Dream Big Primary Pilot and see the incredible work being done within the primary space. The time, effort and passion everyone working on this Pilot has put in has already started to have an impact. Lesson 5 - Outreach: You can have as many degrees as you want, but when you go into a community, you need to make your work and knowledge relevant to them. Often you're approaching people who likely wouldn't have otherwise chosen to come to you for whatever reason, make your time with them worth their while. Approach every situation with curiosity and humility. Mere observance is sometimes your best friend. Oftentimes practitioners from the community are your best resource in learning about and relating to community members.

Over the past week, I've sat with professionals across several industry sectors, exploring Skills Street as a vehicle to enable even the most prominent of our South #Yorkshire business brands to think differently about approaching a future for their industry. For some ... it's the HERE AND NOW with ongoing implications of accessing and retaining a skilled (and enthusiastic!) workforce. For others, it's scaling a growth model that adapts to emerging markets and trends. What will your business look like in 5 years time (when a current South Yorkshire 11 year old will leave mainstream #education to find employment?!). For ALL of us, it's recognising the need to excite people, much earlier about the possibilities of working in industry. Consider the prospect of a primary school pupil seeing that they don't have to be a Doctor to work in health. That designing games and #digital coding is applying English, literacy and an ability to pass on messages.
