This really helped remind me to look at my pupils as individuals. Can I do more in my lessons to be more inclusive for those who might not have an official diagnosis or those who simply find PE difficult? If we personalize provision, do we personalize expectation? For some, school is a traumatic experience filled with too much noise, too little interest, and not enough people who โget them.โ ๐ญSo why is this so hard? With the ongoing genocides around the world it is important for educators to start putting their mark in this turbulent world. So without further ado: Recognizing Generational Trauma in Students Intergenerational trauma (IGT) occurs when the negative effects of an original trauma experience, such as historic trauma from events like residential schools, are passed down to subsequent generations[1][2]. As educators, it's important to be aware of the signs of IGT in students: - Fear of stigma, anger and defensiveness about their heritage[1] - Healing needs related to the trauma that have not been addressed[1] - Difficulty with attachment, disconnection from family/culture, and high stress levels[4] - Developmental issues due to trauma exposure at a young age[4] - Interpersonal challenges like lower trust, poor social skills, and difficulty understanding social interactions[3] Students dealing with IGT may also exhibit risky behaviors like early sexual activity, substance abuse, and aggression[3]. Recognizing these signs can help educators provide appropriate support. Trauma-Informed Practices for Educators Adopting a trauma-informed approach in the classroom is crucial for supporting students impacted by IGT. Here are some key principles: - Acknowledge the prevalence of trauma, recognize its effects on students, and implement trauma-sensitive practices[3] - Shift perspective from "What's wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?" and "What are your strengths?"[3] - Build trusting relationships with students and create a safe, supportive environment[3] - Teach self-regulation skills based on the science of resilience[3] - Avoid retraumatizing students through insensitive practices[3] Educators can also collaborate with school psychologists, counselors, and community resources to provide comprehensive support for students dealing with IGT. By understanding the signs of IGT and applying trauma-informed practices, educators can help break the cycle of generational trauma and empower students to heal and thrive.
